As part of efforts to address effects of broken homes in the state, the Ogun State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has reunited 210 couples and provided psycho-social counseling for 537 children from the unions.
The commissioner in charge of the ministry, Mrs. Abiola Kufile-Okonji, disclosed this during the visit of the state Assembly’s Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, led by Yetunde Sogbein-Adekanbi, to assess the 2017 budget performance of the ministry at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Okonji added that 45 complicated family cases were successfully handled by the ministry’s conflict resolution team, while additional three homes were registered to provide protection for abandoned children.
The commissioner disclosed that 20 abandoned children were adopted into conducive homes so as to give them necessary care, adding that over N39 million had been paid to respective mothers as upkeep allowance for 525 children, while over 5,000 orphans and vulnerable children have been assisted.
In her response, the House committee chairman, Yetunde Sogbein-Adekanbi, commended the ministry for its ingenuity at generating more revenue into government’s coffers and for being proactive at making use of the available resources to promote Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in the state.
She also lauded the ministry for its programmes geared towards building a society devoid of discrimination against women as well as empowerment for children and the vulnerable group.
