NUBIFIE vows to create industrial unrest over labour ministry’s threat

The National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE) has threatened to go on strike to stop the Ministry of Labour from meddling in its affairs.

The union’s National President, Danjuma Musa gave the warning at a press conference yesterday.

He alleged that the ministry’s Director, Trade Union Services, Mrs. Omoabie Udeme Akpan, imposed a leadership on the union, which it considered not to be in its interest.

Musa said NUBIFIE has the right to conduct its internal affairs without interference from any quarters.

According to him, there had been series of threats to the union’s autonomy, which is predicated on members’ unfettered freedom to freely choose their leadership through national delegates’ conference.

The group alleged that some persons within the ministry had taken advantage of the dispute among its aggrieved members to perpetuate actions that are outside the law.

The union urged the head of service of the federation to call the director of the trade union service to order and avoid throwing the financial sector into crisis.

“We specially call on the presidency to prevail on the director to respect the law and hands off the internal affairs of our union.”
