Yaba residents seek activation of pre-paid meters, reconnection

Reeling under the untold hardship faced by them due to unnecessary disconnections from the power grid and payment of high electricity bills, residents of Government Quarters, Moore Road Estate, Yaba, in Lagos State, have appealed to the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) to commission the already-installed pre-paid metres and restore power to the area.

Speaking during a press conference at the weekend, coordinator of the residents’ association, Mr. Festus Anekwu, decried the inhuman treatment meted out to the estate by EKEDC, which disconnected them despite the high bills they pay.

According to Anekwu, the estate residents want EKEDC to reconnect them to the national grid, urgently commission the pre-paid metres and migrate them to that source of power.

“They should migrate us to the pre-paid metres, which they installed since 2015 and stop trying to arm-twist us by collecting money through the back-door. We are waiting for whatever they will do to connect us to the installed pre-paid metres.

“Their expectation is that when the estate is disconnected, residents will rush out to beg them with money. We do not have that kind of money to beg them. This is the second time the estate will be disconnected this year. The first time was in April and now, May,” Anekwu said.

Another resident, Joe Johnson, said they suffer untold pains, discomfort and damage to their perishable items and other infrastructure whenever they are disconnected.

For those owing the electricity firm among the residents, he urged EKEDC to devise a way of collecting money from its debtors and not punish the whole estate.
