Ijaw indigenes kick against alleged victimisation at Otuoke varsity

Federal University, Otuoke

Angry Ijaw indigenes in Otuoke yesterday took to the streets over their alleged victimisation at the Federal University, Otuoke.

The protesters disrupted academic activities and vehicular movements, as they blocked the entrance to the institution.

They alleged that Ijaw indigenes were not appointed into key positions in the institution, which is located in Ogbia Local Council Area of Bayelsa State.

The institution’s Senior Staff Association of Nigeria universities (SSANU) joined the angry youths in the action.

The protest, which started early in the morning was led by the chairperson of SSANU, Kalizibe Joseph and the National Legal Adviser of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) Worldwide, Tare Porri.

They carried placards with different inscriptions as: “Bayelsans cannot be marginalised in our own lands,” “We want fair representation, Bayelsans are qualified,” while chanting protest songs.

They urged the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Accra Jaja to address the situation.

Jaja, who addressed the protesters in company of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) and some members of the university Senate called for calm down, promising to look into their demands.
