N-power volunteers seek Ugwuanyi’s mediation over unpaid stipends

Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi,

The Federal Government’s N-power Volunteers in Enugu State have urged Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to intervene in the non-payment of their four months’ stipends.

In a petition to the governor, they lamented that over 3000 volunteers were yet to receive their stipends after completing the verification. A copy of the petition by Ugwuoke Benson, Anayo Anthony, Chijioke Michael, Nweke Frank and Odah Nwabueze was given to The Guardian.

The petitioners lamented that the non-payment of their entitlements had made it difficult for them to go to work. The letter reads: “As at the time of writing this letter, three sets of verifications had been carried out. The first round was done at the zonal level from December 19 to 22, 2016, after which December and February stipends were paid to only a certain percentage of them.

“The non-payment of a larger percentage of the volunteers prompted another round of verification, which was done from 22nd February 22 to March 3, 2017 specifically for those who were not initially paid. But, subsequent payments were still made to the same set of people who had previously been paid, leaving out over 3000 others.”

According to them, a source at the presidency disclosed that disparity in age, inadequate academic qualifications, lack of participation in the verification were among the reasons for the non-payment.

But they stated that none of their members was involved in the likely reasons given for the delay and urged Ugwuanyi to unravel the alleged lack of transparency in the programme.
