Gives Abbi community one month to resolve rulership tussle
The Delta State Government says it has disbursed N3.18 billion towards the development of education sector in the state in the last two years. The state Commissioner for Economic Planning, Dr. Kingsley Emu, who confirmed this on telephone at the weekend, disclosed that the money was dispensed for the provision of core infrastructure in the education sector.
Emu said that the amount was also without prejudice to the administration’s huge commitment to meeting the pay of the teachers in the state public education system at the secondary tier.
Besides, the state government has expressed its commitment to the implementation of the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendation to audit all maternal and pre-natal deaths in the state.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Azinge, said that the state government began the process by the establishment of Maternal Death Review (MDR) committee in March 2014, including the follow up of the State Maternal and Pre-Natal Surveillance and Response (NPDSR) steering and technical sub-committee that was inaugurated in July 2016 after the inclusion of a pre-natal, surveillance and response component.
In another development, the state government has issued a one-month ultimatum to the people of Abbi town in Ndokwa West Local Council of the state to resolve the lingering tussle over the agitation of an Okpala-Uku as the traditional head of the town.
A statement signed by the State Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr. Steve Eniotor, stated that government had decided to wade into the matter following petitions written and addressed to the state Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, from the town over the emergence of an Okpala-uku of the community.
The statement reads in part: “The state government attention has been drawn to the lingering tussle in Abbi community over rulership and various petitions addressed to the Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa. In this connection, a one month ultimatum is hereby given to the community to resolve the entire lingering tussle or face the wrath of the government.”
The state government, however, charged the leaders from the three quarters from Abbi, which include Elovie, Okwele and Illimai, to see themselves as one, adding that the issue of who becomes the Okpala-uku of the community should not tear the people apart as government would deal decisively with any trouble-maker.
