There is unease in the Delta State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over alleged plan by Ali-Modu Sheriff to take over the party secretariat in Asaba on Thursday.
The youth wing of the party under the aegis of Delta PDP Youth Vanguard,” in the early hours of yesterday took to the streets of Asaba protesting alleged moves by Sheriff to take over the party secretariat.
The protesters believed to be loyal to Chairman, National Caretaker Committee, Ahmed Makarfi’s faction to which Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and all members of the party belong, said apart from Sheriff’s alleged plans to take over the party in the state, they were also protesting the fact that Okowa used and dumped them.
They chanted solidarity songs as “Okowa is our Governor”, “on Makarfi we stand”, and “no Division in Delta PDP." They also insisted that Okowa used and dumped them before they retired to gate of Government House, Asaba where security agents stopped them before they were addressed by top government officials who reaffirmed Okowa’s commitment to peace and tranquility in the state.
Leader of the youths, Emeka Adigwe, said they were moved to protest Sheriff’s alleged plans to take the state secretariat. But in a swift reaction, the South-South Vice Chairman of the Sheriff faction, Dr. Cairo Ojuogboh said the protesters were a faceless group and hoodlums who do not mean well for state and the party.
He urged Okowa and members of his group to respect the Appeal Court order which affirmed Sheriff as the authentic National Chairman of the PDP.
It was learnt that Sheriff wrote the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris on Monday notifying him of his readiness to take over the Delta PDP secretariat.
