A three-day workshop on minimally invasive surgery has been organised by the Women’s Health and Action Research Centre (WHARC) for Nigerian doctors.
Dr. Uche Menakaya of Junic Specialist Imaging and Women’s Centre said patients that undergo laparoscopic surgery instead of open surgery feel less pain and spend less time at the hospital.
He stated that there is no structure in the country for doctors to acquire new skills especially on laparoscopy.
"This workshop is important because of the increasing demand for minimal invasive surgery. There are many advantages of laparoscopic surgery because patients are more likely to go home quicker. In the use of minimal access technique, patients stay less in hospital and the cost is reduced. Patients may also have less pain and return to work faster.
