ASUU cautions against breakdown of law, urges compensation of victims

ASUU National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on the Federal Government to do the needful with a view to avoiding breakdown of law and order.

The body told the President Buhari to go beyond condemning the killings and improve on the nation’s security network. It also called for compensation for the victims and families of the massacres in Rivers, Benue and Kwara states.

The union said the rising insecurity profile under the present administration showed a faulty security architecture and policy.

ASUU, in a release by its University of Ibadan (UI), chapter chairman, Dr Deji Omole, described the whole scenario as a sign of irresponsibility on the part of the Federal Government to tame the ravaging killer-herdsmen.

Omole, who stated that a government that proclaimed special interest in agriculture could fail a security competency test to protect vulnerable farmers in indigenous areas, noted that the President’s inactions to contain the carnage were compounding humanitarian and food crises in the country.

According to him, Buhari was building a dangerous trend where citizens could rise to defend themselves by taking up arms since the state could no longer protect them.

His words: “The new year killings in some part of the country while the President was telling Nigerians that it has beaten Boko Haram should be rejected by Nigerians. Time has come for all to rise and call on the government to fulfill its duties of protection of lives and properties or quit if it cannot do this.
