UNICEF, others worried over open defecation in Cross River

United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and other organisations have raised concern over open defecation by some communities in Cross River State.

Speaking at the commemoration of World Toilet Day in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Council, UNICEF’s Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Consultant, Mr. Collins Njoku, said the meeting was meant to boost the Open Defecation Free (ODF) status of Yakurr.

The Director General, Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWATSSA), Mr. Ita Ikpeme, complained of some communities’ inability in Yakurr to attained the ODF.

WASH Coordinator, Mr. Sunday Omini, and Community Mobility Officer, Mr. Umet Edodi, during their presentations, disclosed that government planned to set up public toilets in strategic places within the communities.
