The Department of Family Medicine of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) has organized its first ever Annual Staff Productivity and Performance Reward Day.

It was well attended by all staff members of the department as well as an array of distinguished personalities which included the chairman of the occasion and former Chief of Staff to Edo State Government (Hon.Patrick Obahiagbon), the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin (Prof. Osasere Faraday Orumwense) who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academics, Prof. Pius Iribhogbe, the Chief Medical Director of UBTH (Dr. Darlington Obaseki), Commissioner for Employment and Wealth Creation (Barrister Emmanuel Usoh), past president of the Nigerian Medical Association (Dr. Dominic Osaghae mni), former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice (Barrister Henry Idahagbon), former Provost of the University of Benin College of Medical Sciences (Prof. Vincent Iyawe), the Dean of the School of Basic Medical Sciences (Prof.(Mrs) Hetty Oboh), the Grandfather of the department (Dr. Odemwingie Ogbeide), Mother of the department (Dr.(Mrs) A.R. Kubeyinje), Father of the Department (Dr. Damien Uyagu) and Dr. Ehimatie Obazee, amongst others.

In his opening remarks, Obahiagbon, commended the head of department, Dr. Osahon Enabulele, for initiating the programme and expressed happiness with the tremendous progress made in so short a time under his leadership. In his words, ‘’when you put a cerebral and sagacious man like Dr. Enabulele to steer the affairs in any community, things begin to move in both a didactic and dialectical tangent.’’

He thereafter wished the HOD and the entire Department many more successes in the incoming year 2018.
Welcoming guests, Enabulele, informed the gathering of the essence of the occasion. He stated that the initiation of the event, the very first in the over 17 years history of the department, was part of the strategic objectives of his leadership aimed at elevating excellence through regular performance appraisal, improved performance and productivity by staff as well as create a platform for recognizing and rewarding staff in a most objective way for their commitment, unexampled diligence, leadership, professionalism and ethical conduct, and excellent patient care in 2017. The event also serves as a platform for celebrating the successes achieved by the department as well as appreciating those who have supported it.

With respect to achievements recorded so far in the 11 months and 12 days of his leadership (having been appointed HOD on January 10, 2017), he stated that the attainment of the department’s new strategic target of 100% pass by her candidates sitting for each stage (written or clinical) of the National and West African Postgraduate College examinations held in Lagos and Ibadan respectively, has been one of its feats.

His words: ‘’whereas in the last 4 years before I took over as HOD, it used to be a great ordeal laced with lamentations each time our Residents went for exams with an average of one out of five or six candidates, returning home with a pass. But we have since overcome this, as it is now common place for most of our Residents to sit for the Postgraduate College exams with virtually all of them returning home with success stories. The net effect of all these is that whereas in times past, the department produced an average of one (1) to two (2) Senior Registrars per year, in the last 11months and 12days we have produced 8 Senior Registrars in the department.’’

Another landmark achievement recorded is the formal approval granted its request for the establishment of an academic department of Family Medicine in UNIBEN by the Prof. Orumwense-led senate of the university. While appreciating the vice chancellor and several others who helped in the actualization of the dream, Enabulele emphasized that this latest achievement was in line with the World Health Organization’s (WHO) call for the establishment of academic departments of Family Medicine in universities globally. It is one of the ways of improving the production of family physicians/doctors, acknowledged by the WHO as the bedrock of the healthcare system.

The department also recorded improved team spirit and commitment of staff of the Department to assigned tasks with improved staff performance and productivity, despite the evident infrastructural and financial limitations. This, the HOD said, was achieved through effective dissolution of leadership arrogance and retrogressive relational barriers that existed either among various cadres of medical doctors or between various categories of staff in the different units of the department.

In terms of its direction in the incoming year 2018, Enabulele said that though the department is yet to be availed some fundamental tools required for optimal service delivery, perhaps due to what has been described as the lean resources of the hospital, they will nevertheless sustain their commitment to excellence and the overall growth of UBTH, by bringing on board several other initiatives to advance patient care and the overall image and integrity of the department.
