School proprietor uses birthday celebration to aid people’s vision

The celebrant, Alhaja Medinat Sanusi with husband, Dr. Teslim Sanusi, surrounded by their children, cutting the anniversary cake

Thursday December 21, 2017, would remain a memorable day as Ota and its environs stood still for the Managing Director of Cosmic Insurance Brokers Dr. Teslim Sanusi and his wife, Alhaja Medinat Abiola Sanusi, the Proprietress of Benchmark Montessori School in Ikeja when the Sanusis with their children, grand-children, well-wishers and Lions Club members stormed Ota to reach out to the less-privileged through its medical outreach to commemorate the 70th birthday and 500th wedding anniversary of Alhaja Medinat Sanusi.

At the medical outreach event, six cataract surgeries were carried out and over 150 people benefitted from medicated glasses. Some of the activities carried out were free eye screening and treatment, free eye glasses and lectures on diabetes and eyecare.

This is not the first time the Sanusi would visit this center, as her husband also carried out similar medical outreach when he turned 70 five years ago. It was on record that LCIF Ophthalmic/Eye Bank Centre, State Hospital was commissioned 10 years ago when the celebrant’s husband, Dr. Teslim Sanusi, was the District Governor 404B Nigeria between 2006/2007.

In collaboration with the Ogun State government, he spearheaded the establishment of the Eye Centre, the project many believed was unachievable.

The programme commemorating the twin events started on December 18 with the screening exercise to identify those who require medication for eye ailment, medicated eye glasses to correct eye vision or cataract surgery to remove cataract. The family embarked on the medical intervention to assist the less privileged with eye problems, who couldn’t afford it due to lack of finance.

Throwing more light on the motive behind the Medical outreach, Dr. Sanusi said it was his wife and children’s idea to reach out to the less privileged to celebrate the wife’s 70th milestone and 50 anniversary of a beautiful union so that the whole celebration won’t be limited to elaborate ceremony and reception alone.

He thanked the beneficiaries for honouring the family’s humanitarian gesture and prayed that God would continue to strengthen their vision. He implored the invited guest to always make giving to their fellow human beings a priority because God loves a cheerful giver.

Among the beneficiaries of cataract surgical operation was Alhaja Shakirat Hassan who hails from Sango Ota Area of Ogun State. In an emotional voice she said she has been having eye problems for more than five years and claimed to have approached a humanitarian club in the area in 2015 but they couldn’t come to her aid.

“I learnt about this medical mission from people and I came here without knowing anybody. If I want to do it outside, it would have cost me close to a N100, 000. Where would I get such money? With the economic situation in the country and a family came out of their comfort without knowing me. And with the surgery I have regained my vision as I can see clearly. What can I say? My benefactor would live long in good health and prosperity. Her children would find favour in the sight of God and men. I am indeed very grateful.”

And for Rev. Amos Babatunde Olojede, he couldn’t believe this was real, as the couple had demonstrated what to be one’s brother’s keeper means. “I have been having problems with my eyes for the past three years. I came to this eye center in 2014 and I was told that I needed medicated glasses after the screening, but the problem continued. I learnt about this medical outreach through a neighbour and I came, screened, short-listed and my eye was operated upon. This would have cost me between N50, 000 or N70, 000 outside. I am still in shock that people who don’t know me can commit such resources to other fellow human beings. If we have the likes of the Sanusis in this country, it would be a better place for us to live. For me, God is the only rewarder and He would reward them abundantly.”

Giving a vote of thanks on behalf of their children, the celebrant’s eldest daughter, Mrs. Adeola Aminu, thanked their parents for instilling in them the virtues of honesty, uprightness, giving, sharing and selfless service to fellow human beings.

After the medical mission in Ota, the celebration crew then moved to Insurance Brokers House in Yaba, Lagos where the family serenaded the celebrant. In what could be tagged a three-in-one celebration, the 70th birthday, 50th wedding anniversary and that day was also Dr. Teslim Sanusi’s 75th birthday.

Among the dignitaries were chairman of the occasion and former Inspector General of Police, Dr. Musliu Smith, Managing Director of Prestige Insurance Brokers, Dr. Feyisayo Soyewo and his wife, Abiodun, President of Standard Insurance Consultants Limited, Dr. Ahmed Salawudeen was represented by his amiable wife, Alhaja Tolu-Ahmed Salawudeen and daughter, Mrs. Zainab Bakare, Chief Johnson Oladipo Olawande, Prof. Ayoade Adesokan just to mention a few

Extolling the virtues of Alhaja Sanusi whom everybody attested to as a home-builder, Dr. Smith rejoiced with the couple. “I want to rejoice with the Sanusi’s family and darling and lovely mother of the house for witnessing another milestones in their lives. I feel honoured to be part of this ceremony as a presiding officer.

Corroborating, Dr. Smith, Dr. Soyewo commended the couple for keeping their home together in the last five decades in an environment where divorce rate is prevalent. He prayed to the Almighty to continue to be with them as they began another phase in their lives.”
