Okorocha denies renaming road after Buhari

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has debunked the insinuation that he renamed Assumpta Maria Avenue, Owerri, as President Muhammadu Buhari Road.In a statement signed by Okorocha’s Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwueomeodo, yesterday, the governor said the statement from the Catholic Church was made manifest in the social media, without founded ground, and backed by the opposition.

‘’The truth is that Muhammadu Buhari Road begins from Government House Roundabout and ends at the popular Orlu Road Roundabout. Maria Assumpta Avenue begins at Control Post Roundabout and stops at Warehouse Roundabout. The indications are all there boldly written for all to see, ” the statement read.

It continued: ‘’And for the avoidance of doubt, if the government has got any reason to change the name of any road in Owerri, it would go ahead to do so without succumbing to blackmail or intimidation...”

Meanwhile, a statement at the weekend signed by the First Trustee of Abuja Grand Commandery, Knight of St. John International (KSJI), Steve Nwokeocha, said: “in as much as the Catholic Church was not opposed to naming all the roads in Owerri after the president, it should not be the Maria Assumpta Avenue…”

The governor had renamed many roads in the city including that of Wethdral after, Sam Mbakwe; that of inland abroad, after the South African President, Jacob Zuma; another, after Liberian President, Sirleaf.
