Ogun State Police Command has killed a suspected member of the armed robbery gang that allegedly shot and injured the former Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Ogbere Police Division, Mr. Adeyinka Akingbade, the command said in a press release.
The gang in September had ambushed and attacked the DPO and his men while attempting to arrest them when they invaded a hotel in Itele-Ijebu, along Sagamu-Benin Expressway.
During the raid, the police arrested two members of the gang while one escaped and the DPO was shot at close range and was still recuperating in the hospital.
The suspect, according to a statement by the Command’s spokesman, Mr. Abimbola Oyeyemi in Abeokuta yesterday, was shot dead during an encounter with police operatives at Ijebu-Ife on Monday, December 25.
The suspect, who escaped arrest and fled to Delta State after shooting the DPO, had been on the wanted list since then.
Luck ran out on him on Christmas day when police operatives received an information that he was sighted in a beer parlour at Itawade area of Ijebu-Ife, Oyeyemi said.
“Upon the information, the policemen swiftly moved to the place, but before getting there, he had left the place. He was, however traced to his in-law’s house where the police operatives caught up with him.
“Having realised that the game was up, he brought out a pistol and started firing at the policemen. The operatives were left with no other alternative than to fire back, consequence upon which he was shot dead”.
A locally-made pistol, a machete, assorted charms and a Toyota Highlander with two different registration numbers, were recovered from the suspect, the police spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu has commended the resilience of his men in making sure that the last member of the gang was finally brought down.
He warned that no crime committed in Ogun State would go undetected.
