In her speech, Mrs. Maiden Alex-Ibru who received the Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of her late husband acknowledged the organizers, adding that the award came as a surprise.
She described her husband as a humble non-partisan man who founded The Guardian based on his desire to establish an academic and intellectual, newspaper with strong editorials.
She said he was made Minister under the Sani Abacha administration without lobbying for it and that her husband’s stand on the truth made him had issues with the Abacha regime.
President Muhammadu Buhari who was represented by the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Muhammad, urged the Nigeria media to continue to inform Nigerians about the achievement of the present administration.
According to him, despite criticism this administration has performed excellently, part of which is exiting the nation out of recession.
Lagos State Governor who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tunji Bello also urged journalists not to rest on their oars.
