NIS deported 75 illegal migrants, denied 171 entry in 2017, says comptroller

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has disclosed that it deported 75 illegal migrants in 2017. It also refused the entry of 171 others for not showing valid travelling documents.The Cross River State Comptroller of Immigration, Mrs. Funke Adeuyi disclosed this yesterday in Calabar, while reviewing the activities of the command in the outgoing year.

On the Camerounian asylum seekers in the state, she explained that the command, in collaboration with the United Nations High Commission on Refugees, registered 7,204 from October to December 2017.Adeuyi added that the NIS also deployed its trained personnel in the borderlines for effective monitoring.

The comptroller said the repatriated illegal immigrants were arrested at various border posts across the country.On revenue generation, she said the command generated N92.8million from the issuance of passport and other travel documents to eligible applicants, while $8,673.00 was earned from the issuance of visas to eligible applicants on arrival.

She said: “Sadly, we lost six of our officers during the period under review, even as three other senior officers retired after 35 years of service. Also, five erring officers were dismissed and one suspended during the period.“We rescued three trafficked victims whom we handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Person for further action.”

Adeuyi, who recently won an award for exemplary leadership in service, added that the NIS would soon install closed circuit television, as part of its border management system.She commended the Comptroller General, Muhammed Babandede, for unveiling a 20-room apartment for officers in October 2017, at the Mfum border in Etun Local Council Area of the state.
