The Michael and Cecilia Ibru University (MCIU), Agbarha-Otor, Ughelli, Delta State, has held its third yearly Festival of Nine Lessons and carols. With the theme: ‘Jesus: The Reason for the Season,’ the event was graced by heads of churches, universities and government functionaries including the Commissioner for Science and Technology, Joyce Overah, who read the first lesson.

Reading from Genesis 3:8-15, Overah reflected on the Garden of Eden, where mankind incurred God’s wrath through Adam and Eve, who disobeyed God’s admonition and ate from the Tree of Life, leading to their inevitable expulsion and curse from the garden.

The import of the lesson was rubbed in by the soulful rendition of “The new born Prince of peace” by the Michael and Cecilia Ibru University choir. In the third lesson the Vice Chancellor of the Edwin Clark University, Kiagbodo, Delta State, Prof. Timothy Olagbemiro, reading from Isaiah 9:2,6-7, said with the birth of Jesus Christ the “people who walk in darkness have seen light while those who dwelt in the land of shadow of death, have light shone on them, “for unto us a child is born ...and his name will be called wonderful, counsellor, mighty God, everlasting father, prince of peace”.

The festival was laced with short dramas by the Ken Ayogu Group, which eulogized Christ’s good qualities. There were special presentations by the MCF Demonstration Nursery & Primary School, and carols. One of the highlights was the rendition of “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” by the choir of Edwin Clark University. There were also renditions by the Saint Andrew and First Baptist choirs.

The Co-founder and visitor to MCIU, Chief (Mrs.) Cecilia Ibru, praised God for providing the vision and guidance, which“ the university is riding on to future glory and success.”She urged all to emulate Jesus humble and loving qualities, and ended with “Jesus is the reason for the season!”.
