The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Kaduna State Chapter, has alleged plot to frustrate a court order stopping the sacking of teachers. The state Chairman of the NUT, Audu T. Amba, and the state Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Ango Adamu, disclosed this at a press conference in Kaduna.
They faulted the governor’s position through a programme aired on the state radio, KSMC, that the court was wrong in granting the interlocutory injunction.
According to the governor, the teachers who failed the competency test were disengaged before the court order.
The union leaders explained that the National Industrial Court granted the NUT’s interlocutory injunction, following the announcement to sack 21,000 primary school teachers for failing the competency test. They expressed concern that the governor could attempt to frustrate the order, instead of respecting the rule of law.
“Our attentions have also been drawn to the fact that the Kaduna State government, despite the service of the order of interlocutory injunction, is making frantic efforts to frustrate the outcome of the suit in court.“He had directed education secretaries in all local government areas to collect backed-dated letters of disengagement from SUBEB for onward distribution to teachers in their respective local governments,” they said.
According to the union leaders, the state government ought to have approached the appellate court to contest the ruling. They added: “We believe that the rule of law is the bedrock of democracy and any government/institution that refuses to bow to its dictates automatically loses its legitimacy to superintend over the affairs of its citizenry.
“The lawyers representing the state government had even asked the NUT for restrictive order to stop government from sacking the teachers.”The leaders noted that this happened at a time when the government had not issued letters of disengagement to the teachers.
