Thirty victims of human trafficking, who were rescued by National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), were empowered with vocational skills equipment and tools by the agency with support from United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Switzerland Embassy.
They were earlier trained in different vocational skills such as fashion design, catering, hairdressing, photography, among others. They were presented with all the basic tools and equipment.
The Migration Adviser, Embassy of Switzerland, Jolanda Pfister Herren, said stakeholders must collaborate to effectively tackle irregular migration and human trafficking in a sustainable manner.
The Project Coordinator, Anti-trafficking in Persons and Smuggling of Migrants, UNODC, Pelleak OK Serei, said the UNODC was guided by the protocol to prevent, suppress and punish trafficking in persons.
“Today, and in line with these provisions, UNODC, with funding from the government of Switzerland, supports NAPTIP in implementing one of its core mandates by empowering victims of trafficking with vocational skills equipment for catering, hairdressing, photography, tailoring and bead-making.”
He said that UNODC, NAPTIP and the government of Switzerland expect each beneficiary to take proper care of the equipment and maximize its use.
Some of the victims rescued from countries such as Mali, Libya, Omar, thanked UNODC, NAPTIP and Switzerland government for empowering them.
