In a bid to inculcate reading and writing habits in learners, Principal of the Army Children Junior High School, Ikeja, Mr. Ade Adepetun has stressed the need for students to participate in creative writing early in life.
Adepetun stated this at the Award and Prize-giving day of the 2016/2017 set of the school held recently.
Launching the school’s magazine titled ‘‘The Trumpet’’, Adepetun stressed that the art of creative writing should be instilled in pupils from the secondary education level.
He stated that the magazine production was to encourage the habit of reading and writing among pupils because readers are leaders.
This, Adepetun noted would help learners interact more intelligently with their counterparts.
His words: “This is what we are set to achieve and we would pass it on as a legacy to the next set of administrators. We have also ensured the magazine is published yearly to help improve the reading and creative writing culture in learners.”
Emphasising the success recorded by the school in the last Basic Examination Certificate Examination (BECE), Adepetun said, the school had 99.4 per cent excellence; out of 142 students that were registered for the examination, 140 had credit pass while two failed.
Chairman of the Parents’ Forum, Adefolu Ogunyemi advised the students to remain focused and not be swept away with the tide of technology, adding, “You need to shift attention from the excessive use of phones and concentrate more on your academics.”
He enjoined the graduands to be of good character, pointing out that this is a generation that the world is finding hard to trust because they are being distracted by prevalent social vices.
“You can look good but don’t lose your head, you are our future and we urge you to be up to the task. Make up your mind to be successful. Have a plan and work towards it. The cell phone is someone’s creation, what do you want to create yourself?”
In his remarks, the overall best student of the year, Onele Chinweuba said, “My aim is to be a Petro-Chemical engineer, and I hope to contribute my quota to the development of the nation’s economy.
