Faculty of Science celebrates Ogundipe, prays for wisdom in leadership

UNILAG, New Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe

It was a homecoming sort of for the newly appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, as the members of the institution’s Faculty of Science organize grand reception in his honour as the 12th vice chancellor of the university.

Speaking at the special gathering attended by students, staff, friends and well-wishers of the VC, Dean of the faculty, Prof. Adedotun Adekunle, described the professor of Botany and a three-time co-recipient of Faculty of Science best researcher award, as a dynamic, proactive and resilient individual with a strong personality based on integrity and trust.

He said: “We needed to celebrate him, like the late Prof. Jelili Omotola always told us that if your own does not celebrate you, there is a problem and if you have your own and you don’t celebrate them, there is a problem. It is always good to celebrate your own. He is our own, even though he is for the whole university and the country at large, we need to celebrate him.”
He prayed God to grant the VC good wisdom.

Chairperson of the organising committee, Dr. Tenny Egwuatu, said since the VC is from the faculty, “we deemed it wise that he got the recognition of his people before any other faculty.” She said the faculty was excited and proud to have the VC, showing it was a sign that they were doing very well.

While noting that vice chancellorship seat is a hot one, Egwuatu said the gift they presented to him would help him to know that he has the sword he needs to fight the battle and with God on his side, he will be successful. The faculty presented a gift to the VC at the occasion.

Ogundipe in his response called for a harmonious working and academic relationship among staff and students. He urged the staff members to think about the type of university they want, and work towards creating their desired institution. He also called for unity among them and tasked them to render selfless and quality service to the school and nation.

Commending his PhD and masters students for contributing to his achievements so far, he thanked his people for celebrating him and for working behind the scene to ensure his success.

Ogundipe, while attributing his overall success to the Almighty God, he thanked all the teaching and non-teaching staff of the institution and urged them to fervently pray for him.
