A Professor of International Economic Relations at the Lagos State University (LASU), Abolade Adeniji, yesterday tasked Africans in diaspora to invest in the continent.
He gave the charge at the inauguration of the Institute of African and Diaspora Studies, University of Lagos (UNILAG), in partnership with the University of the West Indies, Jamaica.
Adeniji, who presented a paper on “The Global Migration Crisis: Identity, Ethical and Economic Entailments,” said investments in the continent would lift its economic potential.
He explained that the economic attainment of India was championed by Indians in the diaspora, and challenged people of African descent to take a cue from them.
Supporting government to end poverty, hunger, unemployment, diseases and sickness in the black nations, he said, could do this.
Adeniji also called on African leaders to create an enabling environment and policies that would expand emigration benefits in the interest of the black man.
He said: “Africans in diaspora should take a cue from what the Indians have done by going back to their country to invest in healthcare sector, information communication technology, and other sectors.
Also, the vice chancellor of the institution, Prof. Rahamon Bello, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Development Services, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, said: “Africa is about to tell its true stories based on facts and not literatures documented by the colonial masters.”
The Dean, Faculty of Arts and Director, Prof. Muyiwa Falaiye, lamented that Africans had relied so much on the documented literatures that projected negative narratives about the continent.
