Residents of five communities in the Ado/Odo-Ota Local Council of Ogun State say the decrepit state of Igberen Road, Ota, has impacted negatively on their standard of living.
They said some landlords have abandoned their property, while commercial activities had been affected due to the poor state of the road. The residents, comprising dwellers of Ifelodun, Ekotedo, Orelope, Aboloyin and Oremeji communities, during a protest on Saturday, said they had spent millions of naira in repairing the road, adding that all appeal to the state government have proved abortive.
They noted that the impact of heavy-duty trucks, including those of the Ogun State Waste Management Board, which deposit refuse in a rubbish dump in the area, were responsible for the damage of the road.
The protesters displayed placards, which read: ‘Please, stop deceiving us Ogun State Government, keep to your promise on Igberen Road,’ and ‘Ogun State Waste Management Board should please repair our road,’ among others.
A landlord and Chairman, Ekotedo Community Development Association, Mr. Nojeem Akinyemi, said the road becomes flooded any time it rains.“Heavy trucks that bring refuse to the rubbish dump here spoilt the road. There was a time we contributed N2 million to repair the road and clear drainage channels. When the state waste management officials saw the repair, they promised that the state government would assist us.”
The Chairman, Iju-Atan Ilogbo Local Council Development Area, Mr. Jamiu Yakubu, who addressed the protesters, said the council was working with the state government to ensure that the road was constructed.
Also, Alhaji Amosun Oyesiku, Senior Special Assistant on Environment to Ogun State Governor, said all the previous letters written by the communities did not get to the government. “Now that I am aware, it will be brought to the attention of the governor,” he added.
