Cross River state government has raised alarm over the dwindling standard of students’ performance in spellings and grammar in secondary schools across the state.
The commissioner for education Mr. Goddy Eta in his address at the Spelling Bee competition held in the state expressed concern over the attitude of secondary school students saying most of them no longer find study interesting.
Eight secondary schools participated in the competition, which was organised by Fhi360 in collaboration with Four Pillars and Zoe Help Foundation.Eta explained that the competition was aimed at giving the students a platform of confidence and boldness in competing with other contemporary schools.
The Commissioner who was represented by the director, Quality Assurance in the ministry, Mr. Ina James said, “It has become a thing of worry and concern, that students no longer fine study interesting while wrong spellings and vocabulary or grammar has become common”.
While lauding Fhi360 for its support, Eta stated that more of such competition should be encouraged so as to boost the standard of education in the state especially in the areas of spelling, grammar and others.
In her speech, the wife of the state governor, Dr. Linda Ayade lamented the rot in our educational system, pointing out that spelling has become a nightmare to many children and this situation needs an urgent attention. The project director, Four Pillars and Fhi360 Mrs. Josephine Afolabi said all hands must be on deck to improve on the quality of education in the state.
