Council boss pledges to make Yaba refuse-free

The Sole Administrator of Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Bayo Adefuye, has promised to ensure that all parts of the council are free from refuse and dirt. He made this known while leading a mop-up exercise to sensitize residents on a cleaner environment during the rainy season to mark the World Environment Day.

He noted that the cancellation of the monthly sanitation programme by the state government does not give room for residents to be nonchalant about their surroundings, adding that the ‘Operation Cleaner Lagos’ is meant for people to keep their surroundings healthy and habitable and reduce the incidence of flooding during the rainy season.

According to the council boss, meetings have been held with Community Development Associations (CDAs), marker leaders and other stakeholders to ensure that the roads, streets and drainage are kept clean.

“They are our development partners. They have been urged to preach the gospel to the residents. It will be very beneficial when the people themselves appreciate the need to embrace a clean culture. Residents will spend less on hospital bills when the environment is habitable.

“Our Environmental Health Officers are now more ubiquitous than before. They have been told to go from street to street, house to house, market to market to preach the gospel of a clean environment, and also sound the warning that failure to keep the environment clean will attract severe sanction and prosecution,” he said.

He also appealed to residents stop the indiscriminate dumping of refuse along Herbert Macauley Way, UNILAG junction, Atan Cemetery, Akoka Road, Queen’s College road and other black spots in the area.
