Queen College
The Senate has mandated its Committees on Basic Education and Health to carry out a public hearing on the poor living conditions in Queens College, Lagos and the death of the three students.
Adopting a motion sponsored by Senator Binta Masi Garba (APC Adamawa North), titled, “the poor state of infrastructure in Queens College, Lagos”, the upper legislative chamber directed the ministry of education to address the urgent infrastructural needs in the school.
Besides, the lawmakers called for the upgrading of the college as well as provision of clean water system for the school.
They also advocated the expansion of the current boarding facilities for the purpose of decongesting the dormitories.
Garba expressed worry that for a school with such a rich history in academics and character formation forum for every girl-child drawn from across the country to experience such decay to the extent of endangering lives calls for serious concern.
“The facilities have completely deteriorated and dilapidated to the point of endangering, not just the quality of learning taking place in the school but also, now adversely, affecting the health of these girls is worrisome.”
Three pupils of the college, Vivian Osaniyi, Bithia Itulua and Praise Sodipo died in the wake of cholera outbreak which ravaged the school.
The elitist school was enmeshed in crisis following the epidemic and death of the pupils with about 200 others admitted at the school’s sick bay.
The Lagos state ministry of health had in the heat of the controversy directed that the school be shut to allow for renovation which has since been done while the college has been reopened.
