*Students kick, threatening to shutdown activities May 8 if colleagues are not recalled
Six final year students of the Federal University of Technology (FUTO), Owerri including the student leader have been expelled by the institution for their alleged involvement in the violent protest which recently rocked the university.

The Registrar, John Nnabuihe, who disclosed this to The Guardian in Owerri, said the senate of the institution met a few days ago and approved their expulsion.

The affected students include Collins Ogbonna (Fishery and Aquaculture Technology); Elvis Onuoha (Animal Science Technology); and Ebuka Odunze (Computer Science department).

Others are Kenneth Mega (Prosthetics and Orthotics department); Nnamdi Madu and Collins Ugwu both of Optometry department.

Meanwhile, in solidarity with their colleagues, aggrieved students of FUTO and their counterparts in other tertiary institutions in the country have concluded plans to shut down academic and administrative activities at the university on May 8, if the authorities fail to recall the expelled students.

They maintained that the cause of the protest which led to the destruction of properties on campus should be addressed by the management rather than expelling students.

Students of the institution had staged a protest over increase in their tuition and lack of basic facilities. Properties worth millions of naira were destroyed in the ensuing melee which led to the eventual expulsion of the six.

The vice chancellor, Prof. Francis Eze, has since dismissed the alleged hike in tuition by students, reminding that FUTO as a federal institution does not charge school fees.
