Residents of Calabar in the popular Watt market have raised alarm over the fear of contracting cholera due to filth in the market. When The Guardian visited the market, the stench oozing from the filth along Watt by Bedwell and Watt by Garden, was terrible. The refuse has taken over part of the road causing traffic on the busy road.

Some women were seen trying to clear a part with shovels just to display their vegetables, while some were busy eating their lunch as they inhaled the unpleasant odor, other traders said they are afraid it could result to cholera or other illnesses.

They complained of poor sales because customers refuse coming to that axis due to the bad odour. One of the women selling vegetables said people started dumping refuse there about two months ago.

She called on the State government to come to their aid, “Please help us inform the Governor of our problem here before we all die of sickness”.When The Guardian contacted the Director of Cross River Development Authority, (CUDA) Mr. Joe Mary Ita on the matter, he referred us to the Ministry of Environment, headed by Mr. Mike Eyare, who declined to speak on the matter but promised to call back which he never did.
