The Media Aide to the former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, Val Obienyem has confirmed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) searched the apartment occupied by Obi in the building where the agency discovered large sums of money in flat seven.
Speaking to journalists, Obienyem said the ex-governor who is resident in Onitsha, usually stays in the apartment anytime he was in Lagos.
Obienyem who cautioned against mischief-makers seeking to smear Obi’s image, stated that all the tenants in the building were also searched.
“Even though Mr. Obi and his wife had travelled to the United States and the U.K. for some engagements, when we relayed the message of the search to him, he quickly sent the keys to the four-bedroom apartment to the EFCC via courier.
“He even left instructions that we should allow them to also search his Onitsha residence should there be need for that. After the thorough search, nothing was found in the apartment,” Obienyem said.
Obienyem stated that during the search, one of the operatives of the EFCC was overheard asking if the apartment actually belonged to Obi, citing the simple furnishing.
Meanwhile, the Vice Chairman Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Senator Shehu Sani has asked the Presidency to order the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) to publish the assets of public officials in the country.
He said this would give credibility to the anti-corruption crusade of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government.
The lawmaker disclosed that a source at the Nigerian Intelligence Agency (NIA) has confirmed to him that the money found at Osborne Towers in Lagos, currently being investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) actually belongs to the agency. He urged the President to clarify the issue because of the embarrassment it has caused the nation.
Sani spoke in Kaduna yesterday while receiving traders from Kasuanbeshi Market who came on a courtesy visit and to seek his intervention on threats by the government to demolish their shops.
He told journalists after a meeting with the traders that: “There is need to publish the assets of all public office holders in the country.
“The wealth of Nigeria is not in Israel, Italy or Dubai, it is not in off-shore account, it is in the files of public office holders at the CCB. Nigerians will never know how much their leaders have looted until we open the files in the bureau.”
On the controversy over the money discovered at Osborne Towers, Ikoyi in Lagos, he said: “I personally confirmed from government sources as the Vice Cha
“However, the story from the EFCC is different from what I heard from the NIA. So, I think the Presidency needs to step in and clarify the issue.”
