Sheriff’s rejection of resignation option threatens peace deal

National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ali Modu-Sheriff, has rejected calls for his resignation as a condition for a new peace deal in the party.

Sheriff had on Tuesday agreed to the political solution to the crisis at a meeting between PDP governors and former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He, however, said yesterday that the suggestion that he and Caretaker Committee Chairman, Ahmed Makarfi would resign as the necessary sacrifice for the party, was never considered.

He made the clarifications in a statement issued by the Acting National Publicity Secretary of the party, Bernard Mikko. Sheriff was reacting to reports that Jonathan had advocated the exit of both men as solution to the crisis.

He noted that his resignation has never been part of the deal to resolve the crisis in the party, adding that all his traducers would work with him to ensure a free and fair National Convention where a new executive would be elected for the party.

He, however, restated his resolve not to vie for the chairmanship position at the convention, pointing out that he would merely preside over it and allow new leaders to emerge.
