Rivers to review corps members allowances
Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has dismissed the possibility of conducting free, fair and credible elections in the country as long as the Police refuse to change their modus operandi and mentality.
He stressed that the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris believes that heads of law enforcement agencies act as if they can only retain their position when they do the bidding of the government at the centre.
Wike made the assertions yesterday at Government House, Port Harcourt when the state Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Omotayo Adewoye paid him a visit.
He expressed disenchantment with the NYSC for its failure to make public the mass abductions of corps members by the Police and Security agencies during the December 10, 2016 rerun elections in the state.
He regretted that the Nigeria Police have condescended to the level of blackmailing the Rivers people, adding that the state had witnessed relative peace after the elections.
According to him, the conflicts during elections are deliberately generated by the police to create an atmosphere for rigging. He promised to construct a new State Secretariat for the NYSC at Greater Port Harcourt; which will be named after the late Corps Member, Okonta Dumebi.
Wike directed the Secretary to the Rivers State Government to liaise with the State Coordinator of NYSC to work out an improved regime of allowances for corps members to be implemented by his administration.
Adewoye appreciated the governor’s support for the scheme. According to him, the governor as a performer has impacted positively on the activities of the NYSC.
