Makarfi faults Dickson panel report on PDP reconciliation

Ahmed Makarfi

Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) national caretaker committee, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, on Wednesday described the report of the Seriake Dickson- led reconciliation committee as a complete breach of the February 17 Appeal Court Judgement which reinstated Ali Modu Sheriff as PDP national chairman.

The Dickson committee had on Tuesday submitted a report to Sheriff with far-reaching recommendations on how to reunite warring factions of the PDP.

The recommendations include the conduct of a unity national convention on or before June 30, 2017, with convention planners drawn from among PDP governors, National Assembly Caucus and Board of Trustees (BOT).

But in a statement by Makarfi on Wednesday, it was made very clear that the National Caretaker committee was in disagreement with the recommendations.

Makarfi argued that the recommendations were even in breach of the judgement of Appeal Court.

"I am shocked and disappointed that Governor of Bayelsa made a public presentation of a purported report approved or endorsed by us and other stakeholders as reported," he said.

"He (Seriake Dickson) met me yesterday(Tuesday) and I pointed out the problems with his proposals. I told him that it will go against even the Court of Appeal Judgement. At the end, I told him as Caretaker Committee, whatever is approved by the organs of the Party that we represent, we will work with and advised him to revert back to his colleagues and other organs. But this is what we are seeing" Makarfi added.

He further stated that the caretaker committee as a body never got the report even though Dickson promised to bring it to the committee.

"The Committee never saw any draft report even though he (Dickson) promised coming with it. In any case, as personal advice, I referred him back to the organs of the Party and the Goodluck Committee. There was nothing before us from organs of the Party to accept or reject"
