Hero to 'very homesick boy': how Tevez unravelled in China

Argentine star Carlos Tevez arrived in Shanghai to a hero's welcome but sneaked out of China less than a year later and has now sealed a return to Boca Juniors.

The 33-year-old, whose former clubs include Manchester United, Manchester City and Juventus, scored just four goals in the Chinese Super League and missed half the matches injured, out of form or out of shape.

AFP Sports traces Tevez's turbulent 12 months in China and identifies the moment it all started to go wrong for the forward.

Big money
-- December 29, 2016: Shanghai Shenhua, who once boasted a forward line of Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka, say they have signed Tevez from Boca Juniors. Reports say he will earn about 730,000 euros a week, the highest wages in football.

-- January 19, 2017: A beaming Tevez, a blue Shenhua scarf draped around his thick neck, is mobbed by hundreds of fans chanting "Carlos! Carlos!" as he touches down in Shanghai.

-- January 21: Tevez vows to earn every yuan of his bumper contract. "There will probably be pressure, but because I love football very much, I will use my passion," he tells reporters through a translator.

-- February 8: Tevez makes his debut but fails to score as Shenhua crash out of the Asian Champions League in a 2-0 defeat to Brisbane Roar, prompting the Australian club to mock on Twitter, "Carlos who?"

-- March 5: Tevez makes his Chinese Super League (CSL) debut and stars, scoring once and providing two assists in a 4-0 thumping of Jiangsu Suning.

Disney controversy -
-- April 15: The moment Shenhua fans begin to turn on Tevez. Apparently injured, he is spotted at Shanghai Disneyland the same day his side are in action. "We pay him tens of millions so that he can have a guided tour of Shanghai," one disgruntled supporter writes on football website Hupu.

-- May 27: Tevez brands Chinese footballers "clumsy" and "very naive" in a damning interview with Spanish television. He concludes that Chinese football is decades behind Europe, saying: "I don't think they will get there in 50 years."

-- August 15: Injured once more, Tevez flies back to Argentina for treatment on another muscle injury. Shenhua say they fully expect him to be back and say he returned to his homeland with their blessing. "No one ever said he would leave (permanently)," a club spokesman tells AFP.

-- August 30: Tevez returns to China and the club say he is fit to play. But Chinese media and Shenhua fans take to calling him "very homesick boy," a nod to his troubles settling anywhere during his career and a play on how his name is pronounced in Chinese.

-- September 11: With Shenhua struggling below mid-table in the CSL, Uruguayan coach Gus Poyet quits. Technical director Wu Jingui takes over.

Overweight, dropped -
-- September 13: Wu wastes no time laying down the law, saying that Tevez is "overweight" and will not feature until he shapes up. "When you are on the pitch, if you can’t play at 100 percent, then it is completely meaningless," says Wu.

-- September 15: Wu takes a more conciliatory tone, saying Tevez is showing a better attitude and doing extra training of his own will. "With his current attitude we will see a different Tevez," he says.

-- September 16: Tevez climbs off the bench and scores but Shenhua are thumped 6-1 at rivals Shanghai SIPG.

-- November 2: With an FA Cup final against SIPG looming, Tevez sheds six kilos (13 pounds) and his club say he is determined to prove his doubters wrong.

-- November 19: Tevez is left out of Shenhua's squad for the Cup final first leg at home with no reason given by the club. They win 1-0 in his absence.

-- November 26: He is missing again as his side win the Cup. It transpires that he flew back to Argentina after being left out of the Shenhua squad once more.

-- December 4: Tevez ordered to return to Shanghai by December 26 if he wants to save his career in China.

-- January 6, 2018: Calls time on his China nightmare as he signs for boyhood club Boca Juniors for a third time.

Guardiola apologises to Dyche after touchline row

Pep Guardiola apologised to Burnley manager Sean Dyche for his behaviour after Manchester City equalised in their 4-1 FA Cup third round victory.

City boss Guardiola gestured angrily towards Dyche, making a 'yapping' gesture at his counterpart and the fourth official, as a furious row erupted between the two at Eastlands on Saturday following Sergio Aguero's 56th-minute equaliser.

"I am sorry, I apologise. I didn't want to get out of control," Guardiola said.

Aguero's leveller came from a quickly-taken Ilkay Gundogan free-kick which angered Burnley players, who thought that referee Graham Scott allowed the set piece to be taken before they were ready.

Guardiola later claimed his gestures were simply a request for Burnley to leave the officials alone, but it was certainly an ugly scene and one that ended with fourth official Andy Haines ordering the Spaniard to return to his technical area.

"I said 'Leave the referees please'. I have a lot of respect for what he (Dyche) does and the way he plays is completely different to how we want to play.

"But they do it perfectly and that is why football is top. I think all the managers around the world have to control. If they were offended, I am sorry."

That flashpoint was a rare moment of concern for Guardiola and City on an afternoon in which they stormed back after trailing to Ashley Barnes' first half goal.

Aguero's brace, which came inside 94 seconds, plus further efforts from Leroy Sane and Bernardo Silva carried City through to the fourth round of the cup and left Guardiola singing the praises of City's all-time record goalscorer.

"First of all I have to say its an honour for me to have Sergio Aguero under my command," he said.

"He is always the kind of player who always wants to play and I can understand sometimes he is sad if he doesn't play. I want him to be happy.

"The quality he has inside the box is amazing and both of his goals were amazing.

"He is the kind of player who doesn't intervene much in the first half then in a matter of seconds he can score two goals for us that change the game.

"He is an essential player for us if we want to win something."

Legend Silva
The game also saw David Silva return from Spain where he was tending to his prematurely-born son.

The City midfielder only came back to Manchester on Friday afternoon, less than 24 hours before the cup tie.

Guardiola revealed that Silva was due to return to Valencia immediately after the game and continue to "commute" between Spain and England while his son receives treatment.

The Spanish international released a statement earlier this week to confirm the reasons why he was spending time in his home country.

"I'm happy he made the statement," said Guardiola. "It's not easy to go to Spain, come back and play like that. Now he's going back to Spain and he'll be back when he feels good, we are happy because everything is going well.

"David is a legend for the club, what he's done."

Dyche laughed off suggestions that there was any ill-feeling with Guardiola over the equaliser but was angered by the officiating that led to the City goal.

"You both fight, you both want to win, you both want your teams to win," he said. "That's how it should be. I believe everybody is allowed to be passionate.

"The referee said he didn't have to blow the whistle, but Ashley Westwood was five yards away and the ball went through the gap where he should have been.

"Sometimes in football the rule may be the rule but there's a common sense moment, we've just allowed it to be passed through, I'm bound to be aggrieved by that."

Zidane sure of Ronaldo’s stay

Cristiano Ronaldo. Photo: AFP

Cristiano Ronaldo leaving Real Madrid is an unimaginable prospect for coach Zinedine Zidane.

The Portuguese star remains the subject of growing speculation over his future, with reports suggesting Ronaldo is unsettled at the Santiago Bernabeu.

It stems from the 32-year-old’s apparent displeasure at his contract, with Barcelona rival Lionel Messi and Paris Saint-Germain’s Neymar said to be on higher wages.

But Zidane is confident Ronaldo will stay with Madrid for the remainder of his career.

“I cannot imagine a Real Madrid without Cristiano,” he said ahead of the club’s LaLiga match at Celta Vigo today.

“He is a Madrid player and what he wants is to finish his career here. I do not see him playing anywhere else.”

The European champions, who trail league leaders Barcelona by 14 points, are thought to be in the market for a goalkeeper – with Athletic Bilbao’s Kepa Arrizabalaga heavily linked – but Zidane is keen to stay loyal to his existing squad.

“I do not need a goalkeeper at the moment,” he said. “In June if there are changes, and we sit down and talk, maybe there are positions we can sign players. But today I do not see that.

“I do not want anyone, as I am happy with my squad. I remember last year there were no problems like this, as Madrid was doing well, playing well.

“But when a team is going [on] a bit [of a] bad [run], as can happen sometimes, there is talk of transfers. But I am not that type of coach.”

Zidane will be without Sergio Ramos for this weekend’s match as the defender has a calf problem, but the Frenchman expects to see his side on top form regardless.

“We must hit our level now and show what we can do,” he added. “We have no room for error left this season, but we are very excited about that. That is what motivates us.”

Buhari hails Oshoala on CAF’s award

President Muhammadu Buhari has felicitated with Nigerian football star, Asisat Lamina Oshoala, for winning the CAF Women’s African Football Player of the Year.

President Buhari in a statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, yesterday also felicitated with the Falcon’s team members and all football lovers for the most deserved honour, which, he said, would naturally translate into more responsibilities for exploits on the football field, and her country.

The President commended the strength, dexterity and focus Oshoala has displayed, working really hard from an early age to represent Nigeria in international tournaments before she was 20 years, and always showcasing her skills in her clubs.

The statement also quoted Buhari as saying that the footballer’s many awards and achievements, which include winning the CAF award for the third time, at such age clearly demonstrates that she always rises to the occasion as a professional, and deserves continental recognitions.

Eagles leave tomorrow for CHAN in Morocco

CHAN Eagles will leave Abuja tomorrow for the Championship of African Nations (CHAN) holding in Morocco, team Head Coach Salisu Yusuf said yesterday in Abuja.

The coach told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that his 23-man squad would be heading for glory as they had prepared very well for the competition.

“We are prepared for what we are going for, and we are sure we will return with glory,” he said.
NAN reports that the CHAN Eagles team comprises three goalkeepers, eight defenders, four midfielders and eight strikers.

Some of the players, including Ikechukwu Ezenwa, who is the team captain, Stephen Eze, and Austin Obaroakpo, also featured prominently in the 2016 edition of the competition in Rwanda.

Current Nigeria Professional Football League top scorer, Anthony Okoptu, Dayo Ojo, Okechukwu Gabriel and Abdullahi Musa will be making their debut at the championship, which is now in its fifth edition.

Nigeria is participating for the third time in the championship since its inception in 2009 in Cote d’Ivoire, with the Eagles playing their opening match on January 15 against Rwanda.

Nigeria’s best outing was in South Africa in 2014, where they came third with Ejike Uzoenyi emerging as the best player.

NAN reports that the championship is designed for players who ply their trade in their various countries’ professional leagues.

This year’s edition, with 16 teams participating, will commence on January 13 and end on February 4.

Barcelona sign 160-million-euro Coutinho in 3rd richest deal

FILES) This file photo taken on December 06, 2017 shows Liverpool's Brazilian midfielder Philippe Coutinho celebrating scoring the opening goal from the penalty spot during the UEFA Champions League Group E football match between Liverpool and Spartak Moscow at Anfield in Liverpool, north-west England on December 6, 2017. When Philippe Coutinho joined Liverpool in 2013, the Brazil forward was so lightly regarded that his signing was overshadowed by the arrival of Daniel Sturridge at Anfield earlier that month. But five years later, Coutinho has become such an formidable force that his departure will be mourned by Liverpool fans around the world if Barcelona complete their bid to land the Reds star in a blockbuster transfer. Paul ELLIS / AFP/

Philippe Coutinho finally got his wish on Saturday when Barcelona agreed to sign the Brazilian star from Liverpool for 160 million euros ($192 million) in the third richest deal of all time.

The swoop for the 25-year-old attacking midfielder -- which contains a 400 million euro release clause -- will be the third biggest deal in football.

Last year, Paris Saint-Germain shelled out a world record 222 million euros to lure Brazilian star Neymar from Barcelona before the French champions then agreed to pay Monaco 120 million euros for Kylian Mbappe in a deal which will be officially activated once the striker's loan period is completed.

"It is with great reluctance that we -– as a team and club –- prepare to say farewell to a good friend, a wonderful person and a fantastic player in Philippe Coutinho," Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp told the club's official website.

"It is no secret that Philippe has wanted this move to happen since July, when Barcelona first made their interest known.

"Philippe was insistent with me, the owners and even his teammates this was a move he was desperate to make happen."

Rio-born Coutinho arrived at Anfield from Inter Milan for £8.5 million in January 2013 and scored 54 goals for the club in all competitions, although he won no silverware during his five-year stay.

Barcelona had tried to sign him in the summer, but his departure is a blow to Liverpool as the playmaker has just returned to top form after an injury-hit start to the season.

He scored six goals in the last seven games of 2017 to put his side firmly in the Champions League places.

Capturing Coutinho allows Barcelona to move on from the bitter experience of losing his Brazil teammate Neymar last summer.

Coutinho had stayed in Liverpool on Saturday while his teammates jetted off to Dubai for warm-weather training, fuelling speculation that he was set to leave the Premier League club.

He was then photographed giving a thumbs-up as he left London for Spain accompanied by his wife, Aine.

Coutinho is expected to watch his new team host Levante on Sunday afternoon at Camp Nou.

Video posted on the club website showed a locker bearing his name had already been reserved for their new recruit.

Coutinho's age is highly attractive to Barca, whose three main stars, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta are all in their thirties. Iniesta, at 33, has shown signs of fatigue this season.

 'What will he gain?'
French media group beIN Sports reported late Saturday that Liverpool will immediately spend 55 million euros of their windfall on Leicester striker Riyad Mahrez.

They claimed Mahrez will have a medical at Liverpool on Sunday before penning a four-year contract.

Liverpool have also been strongly linked with Monaco forward Thomas Lemar, who Arsenal tried to sign before the season.

Coutinho played no role in Liverpool's 2-1 victory over city rivals Everton in the FA Cup on Friday.

Liverpool's winning goal was scored by Virgil Van Dijk, the Dutch defender signed last week from Southampton for £75 million ($101.7 million, 84.5 million euros).

Former Liverpool defender Phil Thompson said his old club had probably got the better deal.

"It's hard to get my head around what Philippe is going to gain because he can't play Champions League football for them, they are running away with the league, and he's got the World Cup at the end of the season," Thompson said on Sky Sports.

"Will he play regularly every week at Barcelona? I'm not too sure. Philippe could have carried on (at Liverpool). He could have been playing in the Champions League."

Meanwhile, later Saturday, Liverpool said they will offer supporters who bought shirts bearing the name of Coutinho a £50 voucher to help offset the impact of the Brazilian star's departure.

"The offer follows today’s announcement that Coutinho will join Barcelona and reflects the exceptional circumstances behind the player’s departure," said the club.

"Supporters should present their 2017-18 Coutinho replica shirt at any official club store where the voucher will be issued...the shirt will not be retained but proof of purchase will be required."

Our players won CAF’s award without controversy, says Laloko

Former Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Kashimawo Laloko, has expressed sadness over Super Eagles players not picking any award at the Aiteo CAF Awards held in Accra, Ghana.

Mohamed Salah of Egypt stole the show, as he won the prize for the best player on the continent. He defeated Sadio Mane of Senegal and Gabonese Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the second and third positions respectively.

Moses finished fourth in the CAF’s award and was conspicuously absent from the Africa best eleven team selection. The nation’s forward and former junior international, Junior Ajayi, who plays for Egypt’s Al Ahly, was among the All-star team.

Re-stating his displeasure, Laloko said CAF’s pattern of voting, is completely different from that of the FIFA, which is better.

“What is realistic would have been for the CAF technical committee members to select players that will stand for the final vote. The way CAF does its own is not the way it is done by FIFA as FIFA allows only members of the technical committee to pick according to the laid down rules.

“What they do in CAF is subjective. Moses did well in the year under review, so also Sane and Salah. Since Salah has been picked, it is their choice, and there is nothing we can do about that. It means we have to work harder to convince them next time that our player can be the best in Africa,” he said.

Laloko, who is the former coach of The Gambia, however, added that CAF’s system encourages sentiment along the Francophone, Anglophone and Arab lines.

“As we can see now, everybody seems to be holding to his or her own child. The French speaking countries now vote for their own likewise the English and the Arabs.

“When we won the award, here we are talking about players, who are reliable and regular for their countries and clubs. Our players were absolutely consistent and good. But now, we are no more there.

“When players like Rashidi Yekini, Victor Ikpeba, Emmanuel Amuneke and Kanu Nwankwo won the award, nobody contested it unlike now. We need to start pushing our players to the world; it is not enough to just discover them from the grassroots, but to also help them for the world to see them. We have to help ourselves, but now nobody wants to help anyone,” he stated.

Antonio Conte blasts Jose Mourinho - 'You are just a little man with low profile'

Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has called Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho "a little man" as the pair continued to trade insults.

On Friday, Mourinho said he would "never be suspended for match-fixing", appearing to talk about Conte.

The Italian received a four-month suspension while at Juventus in 2012-13 for failing to report match-fixing at his previous club Siena.

In 2016, Conte was cleared by a court of any wrongdoing in the matter.

"I think when there are these types of comments, comments where you try to offend the person and don't know the truth, then you are a little man," Conte told BBC Sport on Saturday after his side's 0-0 draw at Norwich City in the FA Cup third round.

In numerous interviews to the media on Saturday, Conte repeatedly called Mourinho "a little man".

He told BBC Radio 5 live: "When is the game against United? We can meet in a room. To try and explain about these comments. I don't know if he is ready to meet me in a room, just me and him.

"I'm not surprised [at the comments]. He has to know before he speaks because he is suffering from amnesia."

Antonio Conte continued to talk about former Chelsea boss Mourinho in the post-match news conference and explained further what had happened in Italy.

"It's true I was banned for four months by the sporting justice for failure to report," Conte, 48, said. "Then I asked for a retrial by court and then they declared it nonsense.

"Before you make these kind of comments you must pay great attention, because you show you are a little man.

"In the past he was a little man in many circumstances, he's a little man in the present and for sure he will be a little man in the future. I consider him a little man and I consider him a man with a very low profile."

Conte also criticised 54-year-old Mourinho, who wore a shirt with the initials 'CR' at a Manchester United news conference in February 2017, in support of another former Chelsea manager, Claudio Ranieri, who had just been sacked by Leicester City.

"I remember with Ranieri when he [Mourinho] offended him for his English," added Conte. "And then when Ranieri was sacked he put on a shirt for Ranieri. You are fake, you are fake.

"I think in this last period he's suffering a bit of amnesia. When you become older there is this type of risk. Also for me and for you.

"If you want to fight this person, you try to kill this person. And then after two years you try to help this person because maybe it's good for you, for your profile."

Stoke City sack Mark Hughes

Mark Hughes has been sacked as manager of Stoke City, just hours after the club's FA Cup third-round exit at the hands of League Two Coventry City.

A run of five defeats in seven Premier League games also contributed to Hughes' departure and he leaves with the club in the relegation zone.

Hughes, 54, had been in charge of the Potters for four and a half years.

Stoke, who play Manchester United on 15 January, say they will "look to appoint a new manager as soon as possible".

A section of Stoke fans called for him to leave and held up banners throughout the 2-1 defeat at the Ricoh Arena.

After the game, the Welshman said he did not think the defeat changed the situation regarding his future and said it "might be a blessing" for the rest of the season.

Hughes, a former Manchester City, Blackburn Rovers, Fulham and QPR boss, succeeded Tony Pulis at Stoke in May 2013 and was the fourth longest-serving manager at a Premier League club.

He guided Stoke to three straight ninth-placed finishes, dropping to 13th last season.

Conte brands Mourinho "a little man" as feud escalates

Antonio Conte / AFP PHOTO / Ian KINGTON

Antonio Conte labelled Jose Mourinho "a little man" as the Chelsea manager's feud with the Manchester United boss escalated following his team's FA Cup goalless draw against Norwich on Saturday.

Conte and Mourinho have exchanged increasingly bitter barbs over the course of this season and their rivalry has reached boiling point over the last week.

Responding to Mourinho talking about Conte in relation to a past match-fixing scandal in Italy, the former Juventus boss said: "We all know him very well. But it's always the same. This is his way. It's not a surprise for me.

"I think when you try to hurt a person, especially if you know very well the truth of what happens, the court proved my innocence, when you do this it means you are a little man.

"But this is the not the first time. He does this in the past and he continues to do this in the present and when you are in this way you will continue to be in this way."

Mourinho had triggered the latest bad blood when he was asked about his recent solemn behaviour on the touchline and responded by saying he no longer acts "like a clown" in a comment that was perceived as being aimed at Conte and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

Conte hit back by suggesting that the United manager may be suffering from "demenza senile" -- senile dementia -- because he had clearly forgotten his past wild ways on the touchline.

Mourinho didn't take that jibe well and after United's win against Derby on Friday he said: "What has never happened to me and will never happen is to be suspended for match-fixing."

The surprising reference to "match-fixing" drew a follow-up question as to whether it was directly aimed at Conte.

The Chelsea boss was acquitted of sporting fraud charges in 2016. Prosecutors had requested a six-month suspended sentence following accusations he failed to report episodes of match-fixing while in charge at Serie B side Siena in 2011.

The former Italy manager -- who has always denied any wrongdoing -- served a four-month ban in relation to the affair in 2012.

But when mention was made of the accusations against Conte, Mourinho said: "Did he? Not me."

Barcelona agree to sign Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool

Barcelona on Saturday announced that they had reached an agreement to sign Brazilian star Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool in a deal reported to be worth up to 160 million euros ($192 million).

"Barcelona and Liverpool have reached an agreement for the transfer of Philippe Coutinho. The player will sign a contract for the rest of the season and five more years with a release clause of 400 million euros," said a Barcelona statement.

BREAKING: Barcelona, Liverpool agree £142million deal for Philippe Coutinho

Barcelona have agreed the signing of Philippe Coutinho from Liverpool for a fee that could reach £142m. Barcelona expect the Brazil international to fly out in time to be at their match with Levante on Sunday afternoon. The 25-year-old did not join his Liverpool team-mates as they flew to Dubai on Saturday and has been adamant that he did not wish to play again for the Anfield club.

Barcelona have put together a package worth a basic fee of £106m, plus a further £36m in variables, of which £26m should be easily met. After the £105m basic, an additional £17m would be payable for the first 100 games Coutinho plays for Barcelona, £4.4m per 25 games. A further £4.4m would be paid for Champions League qualification in the first two seasons with a £4.4m bonus for winning the competition. Coutinho has agreed a five-and-a-half-year deal worth £12.1m a season.

Liverpool had refused to countenance a sale in the summer, going so far as to release a statement insisting that he would not depart, and Barça’s private confidence that they would back down proved to be unfounded, even though they did not finally give up until the last day of the summer transfer window. After the window closed, the club’s sporting director, Albert Soler, publicly claimed that at the last minute Liverpool had offered to sell for £177m but that they had that refused to meet such figure as an act of financial responsibility. That statement was met with a denial from Anfield.

Barcelona had not given up on Coutinho but there was an internal debate about the extent to which they could afford to meet a fee which they believed would be in the region of £124m. Some on the board feared that not only was the fee high, having spent over £88m of the £196m they had received for Neymar on Ousame Dembélé, it might also deny opportunities to squad members such as Denis Suárez. While there was little doubt that in the medium to long term he was a priority, Coutinho would also be unable to play in the Champions League this season.

Coutinho remained determined to depart and Liverpool’s posture had changed. That shift became apparent in the public remarks from Anfield, as well as the private information Barcelona had, as they worked with the Brazilian’s camp. Liverpool team-mates had soon come to assume that he was going to leave. On Saturday night, members of the Barcelona squad believed that Coutinho will join them.

Coutinho set to join Barcelona – report

Barcelona and Liverpool have agreed a deal in principle for Philippe Coutinho to move to the Spanish giants for 120 million euros ($144 million) with add-ons worth another 40 million euros, a report said Saturday.

Barcelona-based Sport newspaper said Coutinho would join Barca this month on a deal for five seasons, although it said the details of the deal were still to be finalised.

“The club reached a deal in principle yesterday evening with Liverpool on the final amount of the deal,” Sport reported.

Another newspaper, Mundo Deportivo, said Liverpool were demanding 160 million euros for 25-year-old Coutinho, but that the sum would be made up of the transfer fee and other “variables”.

Coutinho’s departure would be a blow to Liverpool as he is just rounding into top form, scoring six goals in the last seven games of 2017.

Crucially though, acquiring the playmaker would allow Barcelona to move on from the bitter experience of losing his Brazil teammate Neymar last summer to Qatar-backed Paris Saint-Germain for a world record 222 million euros.

Coutinho’s age is also highly attractive to Barca, whose three main stars, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta are all in their thirties. Iniesta, at 33, has shown signs of fatigue this season.

Another report said Coutinho could arrive in Barcelona later Saturday and could be a spectator at Barcelona’s game against Levante at the Camp Nou on Sunday.

French sport daily L’Equipe reported on Saturday that Liverpool were lining up Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez to replace Coutinho, although other reports have indicated that the Merseyside club would prefer to sign Thomas Lemar from Monaco.

Coutinho played no role in Liverpool’s 2-1 victory over city rivals Everton in the FA Cup on Friday. Liverpool’s winner was scored by Virgil Van Dijk, the Dutch defender signed last week from Southampton for £75 million ($101.7 million, 84.5 million euros).

Three fixtures to watch out for as European football resumes

PHOTO:Football Fancast

While the English league kept us glued to our TV sets (or whatever device you use in watching the games) with some breath-taking football over the holiday period, most of the other major European leagues went on short breaks.

The good news now is that these leagues are beginning to resume gradually, which only means a whole lot more football for us.

The Serie A and La Liga return to action this weekend, while in France, Coupe des France games will be played this weekend before the league resumes next weekend. I will be previewing three games to watch from these countries as the football season resumes fully this 2018.

ROMA vs. ATALANTA
The Giallorossi host Atalanta this evening with the aim of a positive start to 2018 after ending last year with a disappointing draw against Sassuolo. Roma, who are nine points behind the leaders, will look to improve as they take on Atalanta, but La Dea have been in excellent form as they come into this game after beating Napoli to earn a spot in the Coppa Italia final four.

Atalanta had been on a five match unbeaten streak before losing surprisingly to Cagliari at the end of the last year and they would be eyeing at least a point against the team from the capital. They have been pretty solid this term, especially in the Europa League, where they topped a group that included Everton and Lyon.

Roma have also been impressive in Europe this term, topping a group that included Chelsea and Atletico Madrid in the UCL, but they crashed out of the Coppa Italia and have slipped well off the pace in the race for the Scudetto. Roma have the best defensive record in the Serie A, but have been struggling defensively recently and have conceded at least one goal in three of their last four league home ties.

Atalanta will definitely fancy their chances in this game, especially after knocking out Napoli of the Coppa Italia. Gian Piero Gasperini's men have impressed with their attacking style, although they also have their own defensive issues, which could mean a really entertaining, free-flowing and open match here for both fans and neutrals alike.

Gregoire Defrel and Rick Karsdorp are doubts for this game, while Kostas Manolas is over his knee problems and should play from the off for Roma and Radja Nainggolan has been left out of the squad after being disciplined by the club. For Atalanta, they have no injury worries and Leonardo Spinazzola, who has been linked with Juventus should play today.

CELTA VIGO vs. REAL MADRID
Los Blancos are not having the best of seasons so far and would hope to turn things around this New Year. The reigning Champions League and La Liga champions ended 2017 on a bitter-sweet note as they retained their FIFA Club World Cup trophy in December only to be pummeled 3-0 by their arch-rivals Barcelona in their final match of the year.

That loss saw them slip down to fourth place on the log and also fourteen points behind the Blaugrana.

Zinedine Zidane knows how fickle the powers that be at Madrid can be and although his job doesn't seem to be on the line at the moment, he knows that a failure here against Celta Vigo might well force Florentino Perez into making important decisions.

This is a potential banana skin for Madrid as getting all three points at Balaidos will be quite a serious challenge against a competent Celta team, who have shown their capabilities to hang with the 'big boys' this season by holding Barcelona to a 2-2 draw at Camp Nou earlier in la liga.

The main issue for Emiliano Unzue and his men is inconsistency since Celta are just struggling to clinch back-to-back wins or produce solid performances in consecutive games, however, their talisman and captain Iago Aspas seems to have found his form as he finished 2017 with six goals in his last five matches and he is a player that Madrid should really be bothered about in this game.

Gareth Bale has finally recovered from injury and scored in the Copa Del Rey during the week, so he is expected to start this game for the Champions. Madrid needs to find some sort of inspiration real quick as they are winless in their last three games on the road in La Liga and failed to find the back of the net against both Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao on their last two travels.

Dani Carvajal is suspended for the visitors, while Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema will both sit out this game with injuries. For Celta, they should have Jonny back in the defense after he picked up a hamstring niggle in midweek.

RENNES vs. PSG
PSG will begin the defence of their Coupe de France title with a tricky trip away to Rennes on Sunday night. Rennes seem to have the most unfortunate draw in the competition as they will be hosting a PSG side that is all out to win as many silverwares as they can afford this season after investing heavily in their squad, but the consolation for them (if there's any) is the fact that they will be playing at home.

Rennes will also hope that PSG will take their feet off the pedal a bit for this fixture and rest some of their start players, but even at that, this PSG team boasts the likes of Loucas Moura, Julian Draxler, Thiago Motta, Javier Pastore and Hatem Ben Arfa, all proven internationals, in their second XI. PSG has lost just two games in all competitions this season and it's hard to see Rennes inflicting a third loss on them, but as we know in football, nothing is ever set in stone, especially in cup ties.

Strasbourg have been the only French side to defeat PSG this season and even fans of Strasbourg didn't see that coming, so Rennes might just try to use the same blueprint for that shock win and replicate the result, though PSG have already doubled their points tally this season, the home side are allowed to dream. PSG have already beaten Rennes 4-1 at this very ground this season and the Parisians will be looking for a repeat performance.

Super Eagles good in attack, says Ex-Argentina coach

Alfio Basile

Legendary Argentinian coach, Alfio Basile, has commented on Argentina’s opponents in Group D of the FIFA World Cup, and has praised the Nigerian national team, Super Eagles for its attack. He also highlighted Nigeria’s major weakness.

Basile was in charge of La Albiceleste when they beat the Super Eagles 2-1 at the 1994 World Cup, despite Samson Siasia giving the Africans an early lead in the eighth minute.

‘’I heard the coach from Iceland, and I thought he was very smart, but we can not be afraid of Iceland, the Nigerians are offensively good, but the defenders are very distracted,’’ Basile told Radio Rivadavia, according to Ole Argentina.

‘’If the team is good, we can beat anybody, if Messi is not there, we are a team.’’Alfio Basile reckons that manager Jorge Sampaoli does not have enough time to adequately prepare his team for the tournament in Russia, saying: ‘’I do not know Sampaoli, but I think he will not have time to work well with the team.’’

Nigeria and Argentina will face off at the Krestovsky Stadium, Saint Petersburg on June 26, 2018.Meanwhile, a talented Nigerian winger, Xavier Amaechi, has been rewarded with a new deal by Premier League side Arsenal.

Arsenal youth-team expert Jeorge Bird writes on his blog that Amaechi has signed his first professional contract with the club on the same day he celebrated his 17th birthday.

Born January 5, 2001, the highly-rated offensive all-rounder signed a scholarship with Arsenal in the summer of 2017.

Amaechi is a product of Arsenal’s famous Hale End Academy, which produced the likes of Alex Iwobi, Chuba Akpom and Hal Robson-Kanu.This season, he has featured in three matches and scored three goals for Arsenal’s U18 team in the U18 Premier League, having recovered from an injury, which had kept him on the sidelines.

Xavier Amaechi has played for England at U15 and U16 level but those matches are not competitive in the eyes of Fifa.

Jose Mourinho: From walking out at Benfica to huge power struggles at Chelsea

• How It All Unravelled For Man United Boss At His Former Clubs

Jose Mourinho has vowed to see out the 18 months remaining on his Manchester United contract.Mourinho’s relationship with the Old Trafford board is understood to be under strain after he questioned the club’s spending when United slipped 15 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City.Amid the uncertainty shrouding his future, Sportsmail takes a look at how his tenure came to an end at his former clubs.

Benfica
Following Mourinho’s unrivalled coaching education at Porto and Barcelona — under the tutelage of Sir Bobby Robson and latterly Louis van Gaal — his first head coaching job came at Benfica in 2000.He succeeded Jupp Heynckes at the beginning of the 2000-01 season and made an early statement of intent by thrashing bitter rivals Sporting Lisbon 3-0.

But his reign risked being cut short after Manuel Vilarinho was elected the new club president. Vilarinho was hellbent on instating former Benfica player Toni as head coach – a decision he later admitted that he regrets.Mourinho tested the water following the win over Sporting, fearing his job was at risk, and asked for a contract extension, which the club refused. The head coach resigned with immediate effect after just nine games in charge.

Uniao de Leiria
With Mourinho eager to get back in the game, Primeira Liga club Uniao de Leiria took a punt on the then 38-year-old.The Leiria club were not among the league’s big-hitters, such as Benfica or Portugal, and finished the previous season in 10th place.Mourinho took the club on an eight-match unbeaten run in the league, recording six wins and two draws, on his way to steering them to a fifth-place finish in the 2001-02 season.
His work at Uniao de Leiria was not to go unnoticed and the big dogs came calling soon after.

Porto
In January 2002, Uniao de Leiria were above Porto in the league and the Portuguese giants, sitting in fifth, moved to rectify that. They brought in Mourinho, who proceeded to guide the team to third before vowing to make them champions the year after. And he did just that.

The 2003-04 season he went one better, incredibly adding the Champions League to his trophy haul — eliminating the likes of Manchester United before beating Monaco 3-0 in the final — in a sensational double. He left the Estadio do Dragao a hero after his three-year stint.

Chelsea
Mourinho’s heroics at Porto earned him a lucrative deal from Roman Abramovich at Chelsea ahead of the 2004-05 campaign. He won the Blues’ first top-flight title in 50 years during in his maiden season in charge and made it two titles in a row in the 2005-06 season. All was coming up roses on the field for Mourinho, but behind the scenes it was beginning to look like a very different story.

A power struggle between him and sporting director Frank Arnesen came bubbling to the surface, while relations between him, Abramovich and the Russian’s advisor, Piet de Visser, were breaking down. The poor relationship heightened following the then club-record signing of Andriy Shevchenko from AC Milan for £30million.

Due to the peerless form of Didier Drogba that year, the Ukrainian was shunned to the sidelines. But Abramovich’s insistence on Mourinho playing the former Milan striker became a bone of contention throughout the season.Avram Grant was then appointed sporting director at Stamford Bridge, despite Mourinho’s objections, and was even handed a place on the club’s board.

A comparatively poor start to the 2007-08 season put paid to Mourinho’s ability to carry on and he promptly left just a month into the season – to be replaced by Grant. His unceremonious exit from Stamford Bridge marred his superhuman achievements there, leaving as the club’s most successful manager of all time and with a spotless home record.

Inter
The Portuguese took the reins at the San Siro at the start of the 2008-09 season after almost eight months out of work.He soon got back to winning ways — claiming the Serie A title by a 10-point margin — but the season was still viewed as a disappointment as Inter failed to improve on their Champions League performance when they were dumped out by Manchester United in the quarter-final.

Mourinho began his war with the Italian media that season, slamming Carlo Ancelotti, then of AC Milan, Juliano Spaletti at Roma and Claudio Ranieri of Juventus at various points throughout the campaign – claiming the former two had no hope of winning any titles. The following season Mourinho showed the first signs of hinting at another move away when he said he would ‘of course’ be interested in succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson when the Scot left his post at Old Trafford.

But that 2009-10 season was truly remarkable — the treble. Led by Samuel Eto’o up front and the guile of Wesley Sneijder and reinforced by Thiago Motta, Dejan Stankovic and Javier Zanetti in the heart of midfield, Mourinho etched his name into the history books at the San Siro.

The day after beating Bayern Munich 2-0 in the Champions League final, Mourinho claimed he was ‘sad, as almost for sure it’s my last game with Inter,’ adding: ‘If you don’t coach Real Madrid then you will always have a gap in your career.’He left the Italian giants, however, a hugely celebrated manager.

Real Madrid
Mourinho won all three domestic trophies at Real Madrid within his first two years courtesy of an embarrassment of both players and riches at his disposal. The 2012-13 season saw Los Blancos reach the semi-final of the Champions League. But after defeat by Jurgen Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund, the Portuguese hinted it would be his last year at the Bernabeu.Whereas his success had endeared him to fans at his previous clubs, such was the expectation at Real Madrid he felt he was ‘hated’ by some in Spain.

Tensions also grew within the club. He had a strained relationship with centre back Sergio Ramos and his decision to sideline veteran goalkeeper and fan favourite Iker Casillas in favour of Diego Lopez meant some fans turned. It essentially ended up dividing Real’s fanbase into ‘Mourinhistas’ and ‘Madridistas’

To boot, a fraught relationship between the manager and superstar striker Cristiano Ronaldo became public when the Mourinho criticised his compatriot, saying: ‘Maybe he thinks he knows everything and that the coach cannot improve him anymore.’The manager conceded the 2012-13 season had been the ‘worst of my career’ after suffering defeat by city rivals Atletico in the Copa del Rey final and failing to win any silverware.
He left the club under a dark cloud following the season, despite signing a four-year extension just 12 months prior.

The 54-year-old later said he had to beg the club to let him go as he ‘was not in love’ with his life in Spain‘To be honest, with the club [Real]’s structure, they wanted me to stay, they didn’t want me to leave,’ said Mourinho last summer.

‘Everybody in the club, president, CEO, the board, myself, we all felt after the years I was there that the difficult part of the job was done and they wanted me to stay.‘In fact, I almost had to beg to let them let me go.’

Chelsea
It was something of a homecoming when Mourinho returned to Stamford Bridge ahead of the 2013-14 campaign. After finishing third in his first season back at the Bridge, Mourinho romped to his third league title with Chelsea the following year. His third season began disastrously – his worst start to a managerial stint.

He had signed a four-year deal which was designed to keep him at the west London club until 2019 after the title-winning exploits the previous season but, once again, he would not see out his deal.

The Blues picked up just 11 points from their opening 12 league games and were dumped out of the League Cup on penalties by Stoke. Amid this terrible run, Mourinho was embroiled in a touchline row between him and then Chelsea club doctor Eva Carneiro which turned hugely unsavoury.
Mourinho was infuriated when Dr Carneiro and physio Jon Fearn went onto the field to treat Eden Hazard in stoppage time, with his team down to 10 men and hoping to eke out a 2-2 draw in August 2015.

Dr Carneiro was eventually sacked by the club and Chelsea were made to settle a multi-million-pound deal after she sued for constructive dismissal. In December — with the then champions sitting in a lowly 16th place in the league — Chelsea announced they would be parting company with Mourinho by mutual consent.

They hastened to add, however: ‘The club wishes to make clear Jose leaves us on good terms and will always remain a much-loved, respected and significant figure at Chelsea.’

Again, the power of sport to impact the world

George Opong Weah

I run the risk of sounding like a broken record and repeating myself from last week. A happy New Year to all. One day soon in the future the world will wake up from its leisurely slumber and start to appreciate the awesome power of sports in the affairs of humanity. When it does, the world will not remain the same.

Nelson Mandela’s words in 2005 rings out loud and clear: ‘Sport has the power to change the world’. Sport demonstrates its potency every day yet the world seems blinded by the euphoria of medals and of winning to the unfortunate detriment of its ability to impact where other things have failed.

One day soon, the world will suddenly realise that it had in its pocket, all the time, potentially, the most potent weapon in the world to tackle some of its most challenging problems, including, probably, the most intractable – religion and poverty.

In the next few weeks the 2018 Winter Olympics will start in PyeongChang, South Korea. There has been apprehension about a possible escalation of the lingering and very dangerous political situation in the region.

Would the games be disrupted by a real and present threat of a Nuclear conflagration erupting between North Korea and USA/South Korea? Would participating countries scurry away if North Korea should carry out another one of its recent nuclear tests that have recently brought the world to the edge of a nuclear war that could destroy human civilization?

In the middle of these fears, this past one week, the seemingly dangerous situation has started to thaw in a surprising development between the two warring Korean enemy nations – North and South Korea. A communications hotline that once existed between the two countries but was disconnected since 2015 was suddenly brought back to life by the North Koreans. Some level of communication has started already and both countries have agreed to further high-level talks on January 9. One item that shall be on the table when they meet would be North Korea’s attendance at the games that everyone had thought would not happen. This development has left the entire world stunned as it came completely and unexpectedly from the blues.

This seemingly inconceivable development is precipitated by a simple event – the Winter Olympic Games coming up in PyeongChang, when the rest of the world will assemble in South Korea for a competition amongst the best athletes from around the world. As has been the case in the past, differences and divisions between people, countries, religions, races, and so on, are set aside, and replaced, albeit temporarily, with healthy competition, in an atmosphere of friendship and peace amongst all the youths of the world.

It seems the world now takes such development for granted and does little to escalate its awesome power to new levels and different directions.
PyeongChang 2018 serves as one more reminder to the political leaders of the world to look more closely at what sports can do beyond the present level of providing a temporary truce between warring nations.

The CAF Awards
Something similar is also brewing in Africa. A few days ago, a very simple but significant event took place in the city of Accra, Ghana. It was another edition of the prestigious Confederation of African Football (CAF) annual awards to celebrate the continent’s best football personalities.

This year’s event was slightly different, particularly in the quality of the audience and the participants. For the first time in a long while the event set new standards in the attendance by very high profile persons from politics and football. The presence of former political giants like Nigeria’s former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and Ghana’s Jerry Rawlings, drew serious attention to a new dimension in sports. Politics and sports are discovering a new platform for serious collaboration.

Aside from some political progressive giants, there was an unusually large presence of football cult heroes from across the African continent in attendance. All previous winners of the prestigious best player of the year award in the past decade, at least, were present. All the final nominees of this year’s event, as well as many distinguished and accomplished former international footballers from different African countries were also present.

Interestingly also, more than at any other time in the history of the event, legendary footballers were given major roles to play in the evening’s presentation. The two main anchors were Carol, a popular South African female artist and Deidre Drogba, one of Africa’s most celebrated and most successful footballers from Cote D’Ivoire.

One of the high points of the evening was the acknowledgement of the first African football player to transit successfully from football to politics using the power of his popularity and his social and economic contributions to his war-ravaged country to become President of his country, Liberia.

Although George Opong Weah was represented by his wife, the announcement of her presence produced the loudest applause of the night. It was the demonstration of the power of sports at its best and most visible.During his beautifully delivered speech, the President of Ghana also paid tribute to the great Liberian forward. I could feel a sensation in the air that has the potential and the power to ignite a new political fire in the African continent.

If Drogba and any number of very successful and educated African sports heroes were not thinking before now of a political life after their sport, I believe a new chapter was opened that night. The sparks of such an ambition would have been ignited somewhere within them, and no one should be surprised hereafter if renowned African athletes in several countries start to explore and exploit the power of their popularity, worldview, the values and virtues in their genes, imbibed in the process of achieving success in sports, to new possibilities in the game of politics.

In Africa, the political terrain is still virgin, littered with the failures of self-centred and greed-driven politicians that have only succeeded in impoverishing the continent and the people, and appear to be rudderless in tackling the unique problems of the continent. So, the field is ripe for the taking.

George Opong Weah has just opened a new vista. Sports persons are developed with the enduring spirit to win through the hard and harsh paths they must traverse to do so. These can be deployed successfully in the murky field of politics.

I foresee, as I wrote on this page last week, a situation in the very near future where Deidre Drogba in Cote D’Ivoire, Samuel Eto Fils in the Cameroun, Haile Gbrseallasie in Ethiopia, Pierre Aubameyang in Gabon, Matamba Mutombo in Uganda, and a few others with the courage and conviction to mount the political rostrum and venture into the world of partisan politics.

They will enter the race prepared like Weah, applying the strengths inherent in sport - hard work, dedication, patience, discipline, fair play, teamwork, healthy competitive spirit to accept defeat and celebrate victory! Their entrance into the political terrain can change the dynamics of politics, bring genuine progressive development to the continent and introduce some new elements to governance that can positively impact Africa and change the world.Late Nelson Mandela’s wise and prophetic words may be about to find fulfillment.

Salah: From Chelsea ‘Flop’ to African king

It took Liverpool and Egypt star, Mohamed Salah, just three years to transform from a Chelsea reject to being crowned African Player of the Year in Ghana on Thursday.

Salah failed to blossom after moving from Swiss outfit, Basel, to Stamford Bridge, leading to him being loaned to Serie A sides Fiorentina and AS Roma, then sold to the latter. At Roma, his career took off as he scored 29 goals in two seasons and created 17 others to draw the attention of several English Premier League suitors.

Liverpool made a successful £34.3 million bid and Salah has not looked back since, scoring 23 goals in 29 matches in all competitions. He has made a habit of bagging braces with the most recent helping Liverpool come from behind at home to edge Leicester City 2-1 last month.Seventeen of the goals have come in the Premier League, placing him second in the scorers’ charts, only one goal behind Harry Kane of Tottenham Hotspur.

Apart from his Liverpool exploits, Salah last year helped resurgent Egypt finish Africa Cup of Nations runners-up and reach the World Cup for the first time since 1990.The African Player of the Year title completed an awards hat-trick after he was named BBC African Footballer of the Year in December and Arab Player of the Year earlier this week.

It is a far cry from a few years ago when Salah was doubting whether he could ever become a regular scorer in a major European league.“Mohamed has been absolutely amazing and gives Liverpool a different dimension because his pace gets him behind defenders,” said former Liverpool star Ian Rush.

“Before the arrival of Salah, opponents of Liverpool were happy in the knowledge that no one was going past them.”Another former Liverpool star, Gary McAllister, said the Egyptian combined individual skill with teamwork.“Mohamed has wonderful flair, but also works effortlessly for the side and is very much a team player.

“He works his socks off for the badge and that is what really impresses me. He is also capable of scoring from all areas of the pitch.”Most Egyptian stars eventually play for one of the Cairo club giants — Al Ahly or Zamalek — before considering a move to Europe. But Salah never lined up for the “Red Devils” of Ahly or the “White Knights” of Zamalek, turning out for less fashionable El Mokawloon instead in the Egyptian capital.

His goals attracted the attention of Basel, who signed him after Egyptian domestic football was suspended in 2012 when a football-related Port Said riot claimed more than 70 lives.

He played for Egypt at under-20 and under-23 levels before making his senior debut and was the leading 2018 World Cup qualifying scorer in Africa with five goals.

At Aiteo CAF Awards, football returns to players

Aiteo African Footballer of the Year Award winner, Mohammed Salah (second right) flanked by first runner-up, Sadio Mane (left), African Female Footballer of the Year winner, Asisat Oshoala (second left) and second runner-up, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang during the press conference after the CAF awards at the Accra International Press Conference… on Thursday.

They came in their hundreds from across the continent. Current and past players, who in their time made the continent the envy of others due to the exciting brand of the game played by its teams, were all at the Accra Conference Centre to witness the unveiling of Africa’s current best performers in the game.

Quite unlike in the past editions, the players were given the prime position, with one of the icons, Cote d’Ivoire’s Didier Drogba handling the proceedings alongside South Africa’s entertainer, Carol Shabalala. For the first time in the history of the awards, all the past winners of the awards still alive, including the 1971 winner, Ghana’s Ibrahim Sunday, were there to show that Africa has come of age.

Aside the footballers, Africa’s captains of politics, business, and entertainment were also present to witness what many described as the best African Football Awards in history. The excitement started building outside the hall when the news spread that such luminaries as Morocco’s Mohamed Timoumi, Algeria’s Lakhdar Belloumi, Nigeria’s Victor Ikpeba and Emmanuel Amuneke, who later presented the Coach of the Year award, were within the conference centre.

There were also the best musicians and dancers from across the continent in a blend of music and sports that kept the audience on the edge of their seats throughout the a little more than two hours of the show. This year’s awards was also different in that it was the first time in the history of the event that football fans and the public participated in choosing the African Player of the Year and Africa’s best team.

Former winner of the award, Emmanuel Amuneke echoed the opinion of the footballers present when he said, “this is a special day in the annals of African football. I want to thank CAF for giving the players the opportunity to be here. It is unprecedented and we thank CAF for that.” Amuneke recalled that in the past, footballers were relegated to the background in an event that was supposed to celebrate them.

Cameroun’s Samuel Eto’o Fils, a former serial winner of the award, was also elated that the stars were at last given the opportunity to shine at the event.Eto’o is one of the past winners of the award tipped by many to play prominent roles in future editions of the awards night.

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, who attended the event with his Information and sports top officials, was also pleasantly surprised by the changes in this year’s awards. “We are very happy with what Aiteo as an institution is doing for Nigerian Football, and that is why we are here to support them, to support the NFF and to support CAF. This has been a spectacular event and it is good for the image of Nigeria.

“This is a clear departure from the past as footballers have been given the opportunity to participate in their event. I commend CAF and the Aiteo Group for putting up such a successful event.”Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Amaju Pinnick also praised the organisers of the awards, saying it met the expectations of the football body.

“This has been a very exciting and colourful night. It has been worthwhile. Everyone, from CAF to Aiteo, is happy about the turn out of the very first Awards that both are involved together and the NFF is also happy,” he said.Vice Chairman of AITEO Group, Benedict Peters, whose company signed a contract with CAF in Lagos in October 2017 as the title sponsor of the awards, bankrolled the event for the first time.

Peters, who was thrilled by its outcome, promised that his company would continue to invest in the development of the continent’s football, adding that they were always looking at ways of developing African youths.

“Africa has always been recognised as a continent with great sporting potential. With our teeming youth shaping today and redefining the future with creativity, passion and innovation, it is important that we collectively continue to provide them with platforms for recognition and inspiration.

“Football has always been a unifying factor and great tool for promoting integration and development. Fort the past 26 years, CAF has consistently recognised distinction in the game, a vision and response that aligns with Aiteo’s values of creating opportunities, healthy competition and respect for hardwork.

“Today, we also celebrate the legends, who have not stopped winning in other aspects of life. Role models and ambassadors of Africa, who inspire others and have set the pace in their pursuit of excellence. We say hearty congratulations to all the winners tonight. By winners, I mean everyone gathered in this room, players or spectators from all over Africa and beyond, who are proud of the game, proud of our champions and of their many successes. We look forward to witnessing more like George Weah, president-elect of Liberia, who demonstrates that leadership can be extended off the pitch to other endeavours of life. The way we conceive the future sculpts the present.”

Also basking in the euphoria of what turned out to be a monumental event, CAF President, Ahmad said it was part of his vision to align African football with the best practices in other parts of the world. He said: “We wish to congratulate one of our legends, George Weah, who is represented her by his wife.

“The event is organized with support from our partners, AITEO, which has promised to help the development of the African game. On behalf of the African football family, I want to thank you for the support you have been given African football.“For the first time in the history of this awards ceremony, the legends of African football played a major role as they turned up in their numbers to grace the occasion.

“For those who were present and for those who could not come, we are grateful and we would like to assure them that we will deepen their contribution to the development of the game in Africa.“Their presence helped to make this event a great success and their enthusiasm and positive spirit helped make our time together very productive.

“For the nominees and award winners, we would like to congratulate all of them as they deserve the recognition they got. We want to encourage them and all the footballers across Africa to work harder this year to continue to hoist the flag of Africa wherever they find themselves.

“We would to thank all clubs that released their players for the event particularly Liverpool Football Club of England for their outspoken show of respect for African football by releasing their top players to attend the event even though they have an important matches few hours after the event in Accra.

“Our sponsors AITEO deserve big commendation as their significant support ensured the fantastic display last night. While praising their efforts we will be seeking an explanation from AITEO over the line-up of musicians for the event.

“We had agreed with them, in pursuit of continental spread of the performers, to ensure a regional balance and a strong local representation of at least two musicians from the host nation Ghana – Kidi and Shatta Wale. However, that did not happen and there is the need for an explanation from them on why that was the case in order to make next year’s event more successful.”

Also eulogising the African game, Ghana’s President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo described Africans as a people that welcome people to their homes, adding that Ghanaians would continue to support CAF’s activities ‘so that we can produce more Abedi Peles, Rabah Madjers, Roger Millas.
“I am told that unlike in previous editions, we are joined by all the living past winners and all the nominees. We appreciate the changes you have made in the organisation of the awards.

“The nominees are undoubtedly the star performers of African football, who from their performances in the English Premier League and the Bundesliga made Africans proud.“I assure CAF that Ghana will answer its call at any time.”As predicted by followers of the African game, Egypt’s Mohammed Salah and the country’s national team won the best footballer and best team awards.

Salah beat Senegal’s Sadio Mane and Gabon’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the crown, while Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala won in the women’s category.
Super Eagles’ Manager, Gernot Rohr, however, lost the Coach of the Year award to Egypt’s Hector Cuper (Coach of Egypt), and Egypt’s Pharaohs, who took the Pharaohs to the final of the 2017 African Nations Cup, as well as ensuring the country returned to the World Cup after 29 years absence.

Relishing his award, Salah said: “For me, this is a dream come true. I genuinely cherish this award, and I dedicate it to all the young people of Egypt and the whole of Africa. My message to them is that they should never stop dreaming, and they should never stop believing in themselves.”

Apart from footballers, other dignitaries at the event were former President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria, former President John Jerry Rawlings of Ghana (accompanied by his wife, Nana Konadu), the First Lady-designate of Liberia (Mrs. George Weah), Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, Deputy Governor Yetunde Onanuga of Ogun State, CAF President Ahmad, FIFA Secretary –General Fatma Samoura, Members of the Federal Executive Council of Ghana and Members of the CAF Executive Committee.

There were also presidents of CAF’s member associations, a strong team from the Nigeria Football Federation, heavy presence of the Ghana Football Association hierarchy and an elite team from the Lagos State Government were complemented by legends and stars of the African game, CAF secretariat, members of the diplomatic corps, leading artistes and other football stakeholders.
