Commercial bus hijacked by gunmen in Lagos, driver killed

A yet-to-be-identified driver of a commercial bus has been shot dead by some suspected robbers in the Mile 2 area of Lagos State.

It was learnt that the victim’s vehicle had been hijacked by the robbers, who were taking turns to dispossess passengers of their valuables, but he refused to let go of the bus.

He was said to have been shot and thrown out of the bus.

The assailants were reported to have abandoned the vehicle and fled after a team of the Rapid Response Squad pursued them on motorcycles.

A witness, Liberty Whitney, who was on the bus and had been dispossessed of her valuables by the robbers, told the police that the suspects were three in number.

The 20-year-old International Relations graduate of Lead City University, Ibadan, Oyo State, said the incident happened on Sunday, November 19, while she was on her way to school.

Whitney said she had boarded the bus at Oshodi en route to Mile 2.

She said, “It was around 9.30pm that I boarded the bus. I was the only passenger in the vehicle as of then. More people later joined and the bus had two vacant seats left.

“The bus left the park and was about to pick more passengers at Cele bus stop when two men in white native attires pointed guns at us. They asked that we remained calm and do as we were told. They then joined the bus.

“While other passengers were screaming and jumping down from the bus, I was held by a man that had joined the bus earlier when I tried to jump down as well. Like other passengers, I never knew the man was a member of the gang.

“When I made another attempt to jump down, one of the robbers pointed a gun in my face with a threat to shoot if I didn’t comply. One of them asked me for my phone, bag and money and when I was reluctant, he hit me in the neck with the butt of the gun. I couldn’t breathe well for some time. I handed over all I had with me instantly: travelling bag, polythene bag, laptop, phone, chargers and school certificates.

“I was allowed to jump down from the vehicle afterwards. A few minutes later, I heard a gunshot. A man was thrown off the bus. He had hanged on the back of the bus when he was shot by the side.”

She explained that after the gunshot, operatives of the RRS chased the vehicle on motorcycles.

The 20-year-old Warri, Delta State indigene said the robbers shot continuously into the air to scare the policemen who continued the chase.

Whitney, who claimed to have trailed the vehicle on a motorcycle, said she was relieved when the robbers abandoned the vehicle and fled at Mile 2.

She said she recovered all her valuables back, except for the phone which the gunmen took away.

The RRS said it was later discovered that the man who was shot was the driver of the bus.

He was said to have been rushed to the Critical Care Unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, where efforts to revive him failed.

“He was fighting for his bus, which was his only source of livelihood, when he was shot. The driver passed away on Thursday, November 23. He died of the gunshot injury he sustained,” the police said.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Chike Oti, who confirmed the incident, said investigations were ongoing.

“The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, for further investigations,” he added.

Oti advised residents of the state not to endanger their lives by arguing with armed robbers.

Lagos records drop in HIV/AIDS cases

Lagos State is said to be impressively emerging out of HIV/AIDS epidemic with a drop in cases of infected persons.

According to the CEO of the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency (LSACA), Dr Oluseyi Temowo, there is about 217, 658 positive people in the state, and about 64, 554 are on Anti-retroviral (ARV).

Temowo stated this while highlighting activities the state is embarking on to observe this year’s World AIDS Day on First of December, with the theme- ‘Right to Health- Making it happen.’

He said going by the records compiled between January and June this year at outreaches and in communities, “we know that there is a dropping of 1.7 percent.”

“For the screening done among communities the prevalence rate is 0.3 percent, whereby 576, 406 were screened at different health facilities and 29, 010 were screened at communities. The figure on positive expectant mothers at antenatal in 2014 is four percent but now, we have 1.4 percent,” said Dr Temowo.

Dr Temowo said the state is planning to commence the screening for HIV of people living with disabilities living in the state starting with the deaf and the blind soon across the state.

“These set of people were neglected before but the decision to enlist them is to ensure nobody is left behind in ensuring that the state captured everybody for an HIV/AIDS state,” said Temowo.

Dr Temowo encouraged non governmental organisations interested in further collaboration with the state on HIV/AIDS to focus on villages, communities and rural areas, “because we need to get them all screened and captured so as to achieve the set target of the eradication of the virus by year 2030 in lagos State using the 90-90-90 initiative.”

” That is 90 percent of the people living with HIV know their status, 90 percent of people who know their status are accessing anti-retroviral treatment, and 90 percent of people on anti- retoviral have suppressed viral load.”

The agency plans to stage a campaign- ‘Walk for HIV’ on World AIDS Day at Ipodo Market in Ikeja and walk through Obafemi Awolowo way, to Allen roundabout, and end it at the office of the Iya-Loja General, Mrs Folasade Tinubu-Ojo.

Dr Temowo said the agency will conduct HIV testing and screening in some markets at Ikorodu and Epe divisions simultaneously, including some parts of Ikeja and Alimosho Divisions.

“The market HIV intervention will continue after the World AIDS Day on the First of December. “We will target all and sundry in the market like beggars because it is an all inclusive thing to achieve 90:90:90,” said Dr Temowo.

Okada riders get Tuesday deadline to wear uniform

Commercial motorcycle operators (okada riders) in Lagos State have been given till Tuesday to begin to wear approved reflective jackets while on the road or risk arrest.

The state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Edgal Imohimi, stated this while addressing the riders on Friday, warning that the police could not guarantee the safety of any member of the public patronising commercial operators without the approved uniform.

He said the action was taken to enable the police to distinguish genuine commercial motorcycle operators from criminal elements using the business as a cover to commit crimes.

He said yellow and pink reflective jackets had been approved for members of Motorcycle Operators Association of Lagos State affiliated to the National Union of Road Transport Workers and the National Motorcycle Owners and Riders’ Association of Lagos State, respectively.

Imohimi advised all operators to get registered for proper identification, warning that any unregistered operator found on the road from Tuesday would be arrested for illegal operation.

He said, “If you want to be a commercial motorcycle operator in Lagos State, you must belong to either NAMORAL or MOALS. All commercial motorcycle operators are, as from Tuesday, expected to have been registered. Motorcycle operators must wear reflective vests designed by the unions with their names and numbers.

“The vests are numbered. There are emergency numbers to call in case a passenger has a problem with any commercial motorcycle operator.’’

He asked leaders of the two motorcycle transport unions to have a database for commercial motorcycle operators in the state.

Police issue warning over new type of car theft

Thieves now steal vehicles without needing the keys, Police have warned.

In a CCTV showing how robbers made away with a car without using the key, two men in white suits and masks were seen pulling up outside a victim’s house in the Elmdon area of Solihull, United Kingdom, carrying relay boxes.

They used one box to receive a signal from a car key inside the property and then transferred the signal to a second box next to the targeted Mercedes on a driveway.

The car’s system was tricked into thinking the key was present and the thieves were able to unlock the vehicle.

The crime took less than a minute and the Mercedes which was stolen around 9pm on 24 September has not yet been recovered.

The devices can receive signals through walls, doors and windows, but not metal.

“To protect against this type of theft, owners can use an additional tested and Thatcham-approved steering lock to cover the entire steering wheel,” said Mark Silvester from the West Midlands Police crime reduction team.

“We also recommend Thatcham-approved tracking solutions fitted to the vehicle,” he added.

“It is always worth speaking to your main dealer, to ensure that your car has had all the latest software updates and talk through security concerns with them.”

Sergeant Tim Evans of Solihull Police said: “It’s important the public are reassured that we are taking proactive steps to tackle this type of crime in Solihull.

“We hope that knowledge of this type of crime will enable members of the public to take simple steps to secure their vehicle and assist us.”

Badoo members are back, kill pastor in Lagos

A Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Pastor was killed at the hours of Sunday by suspected members of the Badoo ritual gang.

His wife and 10-month-old baby were said to have been found unconscious and rushed to Ikorodu General Hospital by policemen from Igbogbo Division.

The attack occurred few hours after acting Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal met with all stakeholders at the palace of the Ikorodu monarch, Oba Abdulrasheed Shotobi on the menace of ritual killings.

It was gathered that the assailants smashed the head of the pastor identified as Victor Kanayo with two big stones, which were said to have been found beside him.

The Nation gathered that the murderers cut the iron bars on the window of the bungalow the family lived in before entering the house.

This is coming on the heels of several efforts by the police to contain the resurgence of the badoo killings which died down after massive raids of several shrines in Agbowa and Imota axis suspected to be the base of the cultists.

According to sources, the pastor and his family were the only ones living in the building because the landlord moved out some months ago as a result of increased insecurity.

The source said: “The pastor was an easy going person. His wife and child are unconscious as I speak to you. They were rushed the general hospital. The police took them them.

Okada riders get 3-day ultimatum in Lagos

The Lagos Commissioner of Police, Mr Imohimi Edgal, has given commercial motorcyclists in the state three days to register with any of the two relevant associations or risk arrest.

Edgal gave the directive on Saturday during an emergency meeting with the leadership the commercial motorcycle operators as part of measures to ensure that they are well coordinated to promote security.

According to him, the two recognised associations are National Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association (NNAMORAL) and Motorcycle Operators Association of Lagos State (MOALS).

The police boss said that the registration was necessary for proper identification, warning that commercial motorcycle operators not registered with either of the unions by Tuesday would be arrested for illegal operation.

“If you want to be a commercial motorcycle operator in Lagos State, you must belong to either NNAMORAL or MOALS.

“All commercial motorcycle operators are given three days to get registered; anyone found wanting will be arrested.

“The operators must wear their reflective vests designed by the unions with their names and numbers.

“Members of the public are advised not to patronise any okada rider (commercial motorcyclist) without the vest as his or her safety cannot be guaranteed,” he said.

He said that the police would not relent in enforcing Lagos traffic laws.

“There are roads okada riders must not ply. They must carry one person at a time.

“The vests are numbered. There are emergency numbers to call in case a passenger has a problem with any commercial motorcycle operator.

“We all want Lagos to be a mega city but this cannot be achieved when we have commercial motorcycle operators without helmets, taking one way and BRT lanes.

“In enforcing traffic laws, community policing is the way out as I don’t intend to enforce these laws without you.”

Edgal directed that the two motorcycle transport unions should have a database for commercial motorcycle operators in the state.

He said that increasing rate of accidents involving commercial motorcyclists made it necessary for their operations to be strictly monitored.

“When you go to the National Orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, and see cases, you will see that there is the need to monitor their (commercial motorcyclists‘) operations,” he said.

Responding, the Chairman of MOALS, Mr Pekis Tijani, said that the union leaders would fully implement the directive.

Tijani, who commended the police boss for the meeting, assured him that motorcycle operation in Lagos would take a new shape.

A 300-level student of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, on Friday morning reportedly hanged himself.

The deceased, Dahiru Adamu, 30, was said to be a student of the Department of Technology Education at the institution. He was found hanging from a tree.

The incident was said to have occurred at the Gubi campus of the school along Kano Road.

A student of the institution, who spoke on a condition of anonymity, told Saturday PUNCH that the body of the victim was left hanging from the tree for about two hours before it was brought down.

He said, “I got to school on Friday morning only to find out that a student had hanged himself in the compound.

“I saw the vice-chancellor and some management staff members at the scene with an ambulance parked by the side. I believe they were waiting for the police to arrive.

“The deceased left his shoes and books under the tree before hanging himself. I don’t know the deceased but I learnt his name was Dahiru Adamu and that he was a 300-level student of Woodwork Section in the Department of Technology Education. He was supposed to be on industrial training but he was still around.”

Our pains, by brother of ex-PDP chairman’s son allegedly killed by wife over 'cheating text message'

Family and friends of Bilyamin Bello, who was killed by his wife, Maryam, held a vigil in his memory during the week in Abuja. There, they called for justice claiming that a murder was committed and the culprit should be made to face the full wrath of the law without reservation.

One of the deceased’s siblings, who pleaded anonymity, said that Bilyamin married Maryam because he loved her, he added that they were best of friends stressing that they were always happy and planning one fun trip or activity together. He said he is however, unhappy that Maryam does not look remorseful for killing his brother.

He said: “So far, the family is grieving. Maryam’s family have come to pay their condolence, the mother has come but what is more painful is the fact that Maryam does not look remorseful for what she did at all. I just pray one day, she finds it in her heart to honestly say what it is that made her do what she did.

“As a family, we are looking at the authority to do what is right, to let justice prevail. This is an example to others. The way this case is treated will determine how we move forward…Bilyamin was not just my older brother but best friend.”

But one of Bilyamin’s friends, Hakeem Ali, who knew the couple very well explained that the deceased was actually a prisoner in his own home. According to him, Maryam was obsessive. He said that she was the kind of wife who kept tabs on her husband by always calling him anytime he tries to hang out with friends, even if it was in the afternoon.

He said, “My friend was being held a prisoner in his own home. He couldn’t leave the house in the sense that it was an ongoing thing; the abuse went on for a while. For me there is a difference between love and when somebody is being obsessive. People tend not to understand the difference between love and obsession.

“It wasn’t the best marriage and I believe either of them could have just walked away. It’s easier to sit down in that sorrow and think you can change things, or that if I can’t have him, no one will. I don’t consider it love. I can’t speak on his behalf. I can’t speak on his personal issue, he is a good friend and he is gone,” said Ali.

He emphasised that the deceased was never a serial cheat. “He was that one guy that the minute we step out, we will be like, it is time for you to go home, your wife is about to call, after hanging out for as little as an hour or even 30 minutes. Even in the afternoon because she always calls. So we formed the habit of going to see him at home,” he said.

“The situation with the law, there are a lot of speculations right now on social media but if Nigeria should excuse people for murder just because they have a child then if I am a murderer, then I will keep on having babies every week, that is not an excuse, for me, if somebody has committed a murder, either intentionally or by mistake, she should not be allowed to even see her baby because you don’t even know her state of mind. I don’t understand the system. A conversation has to begin on domestic violence against men as well because it’s becoming recurrent.

“If it is a case of murder by mistake then there is a price to pay of which a family can forgive but only God gives life and only God can take it. So, if you take a life, then your life should be taken. It is that simple. If the evidence shows it is a murder, then there is no excuse. It should be a case of an eye for an eye. It is that simple.”

Another friend of the deceased, Jamila Shehu, insisted that the couple was truly in love. According to her, Maryam might be suffering from bipolar disorder or PTSD and no one will know, since Nigerians are not good with visiting therapists.

She said: ” I have no idea. I was not in her mind. I don’t know what she was thinking. All I know is that they both loved each other. There was love there, only God knows. It beats my imagination and I don’t want to think about it or give any excuse as a Muslim. He is gone but I don’t know what she was thinking. I don’t know what to think about her.

“For me, she should be punished. She committed murder. So, she should serve the punishment fully. This happened to someone that was loved by a lot of people. He was kind, quiet and people knew them to be in love. So, it beats everybody’s imagination. Domestic violence should be treated. People should relax, love is not by force. Obsession is a disease. There are a lot of people in Nigeria that are sick but people don’t know because you think that if you go to the therapist, they look down on you or think you are crazy but there are a lot of PTSD, bipolar patients and they live among us. Maybe she flipped, maybe it was a psychotic break or maybe she planned it.”

Organiser of the vigil and friend of the deceased, Ibrahim Usman, said he organised the event for two reasons: “First, in the memory of my friend, Bilyaminu and second, to create an awareness against domestic violence. There should be no gender barrier, whoever abuses another should be made to face the law and to remind the world that what happened to Bilyamin is tragic.

“We will be following the case closely until justice is served. We know that someone died and a scene was tampered with. We will follow it closely. We want a Nigeria that will work for us in our life time,” he said.

Maryam Sanda alleged husband killer spared

Maryam Sanda, alleged killer of her husband, Bilyamin Bello, has been spared, for now, of being remanded in prison by the police.

Anjuguri Manzah, spokesman of the FCT police command said the police did not demand prison remand for her because she is nursing a six month old baby. Police said they have secured a court order to remand her for two weeks, after charging her at the High Court in the Jabi district of Abuja, with culpable homicide punishable under section 224 of the Penal Code.

“It should also be noted that this present charge is as a result of preliminary findings; at the end of investigations, additional findings will determine whether the current charge will be amended or whether other persons will be charged along with the suspect,” Manza said.

“To assist the police with their ongoing investigations, some persons have been invited for questioning on the matter.” Sanda is the daughter of Maimuna Aliyu, the former Executive Director of Aso Savings and Loans Limited, while Bello was the son of Haliru Bello, former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In the meantime, the police will be relying on the testimony of some security guards, who witnessed the tragic assault. Sanda allegedly stabbed her husband in the neck, chest and genitals on Saturday while he slept at their home in Maitama, Abuja. She was said to have rushed him to a hospital where he died.

The deceased was reported to have divorced his first wife before marrying Sanda and the couple had a daughter together.

SHOCKER: Police arrest 86-year-old woman for armed-robbery

Police in Philadelphia, U.S., have arrested an 86-year-old woman for an attempted robbery after she pointed a gun at a bank teller and demanded $400, police say.

Reports say that Emily Coakley, who uses a walker, had been to the same bank a day earlier, but when she counted her money after returning home she believed she had been short-changed by $400.

So on Tuesday afternoon, she grabbed a gun and her walker and went back to collect, the sources said.

Police officers quickly moved in to make the arrest, Fox 29 reported.

The elderly woman was then handcuffed and escorted out of the bank with her walker.

Coakley was charged with aggravated assault, robbery, terroristic threats and related offenses, according to police, and was released on her own recognizance.

“That’s crazy. It’s mind-blowing,” one bank customer told Fox 29.

“That’s pretty unusual. I never heard of a bank robber that age and armed,” John McDonald said as he walked outside the bank.

Fox 29 reported that FBI agents examined the woman’s .38 caliber revolver and found that the gun was not loaded, but she was carrying bullets with her.

NFVCB confiscates pirated materials worth N150m at Alaba Market

The National Film and Video Censors Board ( NFVCB ) has seized pirated materials worth N150 million at Alaba International Market in Lagos and arrested five suspects.

Mr Adedayo Thomas, the Director-General (DG) of the board in Lagos on Thursday revealed that the seizure was made between May and October.

He said that the pirated materials seized include: CDs, Videos CDs and literary works.

He also added that the seizure followed the information the board gathered from some people at the market regarded as the hub for piracy.

“We have our informants that spy the market on a regular basis, once they notice any form of piracy operations going on there, they inform the board.

“The seizure of the N150 million worth of materials is a result of the information giving to the board on the mass productions of some films that are yet to be made public.

“When our anti-piracy squad assisted by some police men got to the market, we saw pirated copies of films yet to be produced littering the whole environment and were being sold it at cheaper prices.

“By Nov. 30, the board will start the court proceedings of those arrested for piracy,’’ he said.

Thomas likened piracy to a murder case, robbery or economy sabotage where the suspect wanted to reap where he or she did not sow.

He said that the legitimate owners were usually subjected to huge debts and loss.

“The board is going hard on piracy. We are working seriously to reduce piracy to its barest minimum in our environment.

“The board will go on street campaigns and to secondary schools to enlighten them not to patronise pirated materials and explain the implications of doing so on the rightful owners,’’ he said.

The DG said that the board also frowned at nude movies adding that it was not part of its culture.

He said that nude movies always had negative impacts on the lives of the masses and an abuse on the society.

“We are not going to accept that as we had not done in the past. We are going hard in banning such movies from being shown on air,’’ he said.

Thomas said that the board was also looking at reviewing some of its policies and laws to suit contemporary situations.

He advised Nigerians not to buy pirated materials on the streets or from any unlicensed people selling such works.

The DG said that the industry was worth billions of naira, and urged government and stakeholders to utilise the opportunity in the sector judiciously.

“The industry is generating billions but losing more to piracy.

“Actors, actresses, producers, marketers and other stakeholders are not happy with the loss to piracy.

“The board is doing all it can to sanitise the industry for producers, film makers and other relevant stakeholders to enjoy the fruits of their labour,’’ he said.
