Drama As Father Comes To Court, Throws Grenades At Man Who Murdered His Son

The father of a murdered victim detonated two hand grenades in a courtroom in the Ukrainian city of Nikopol and died in the explosion, police said on Thursday.

“No fewer than seven others present at the trial, including the accused, were injured,’’ police added in a statement.

Report says the suspect was accused of killing the man’s son and one other person after shooting at a car they were in with an automatic weapon in 2016.

Since the outbreak of war in eastern Ukraine in 2014, thousands of weapons have become available on the black market.

Ebonyi governor’s aide accused of raping undergraduate

The Police in Ebonyi State have started investigation into the alleged rape of an undergraduate of the Ebonyi State University, Esther Odinakachi, by the Technical Assistant to the state Governor on the New Media, Francis Nwaze.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Lovet Odah, said the matter, which had been reported at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, was undergoing investigation.

It was learnt that Odinakachi and Nwaze were friends on Facebook, and the undergraduate had indicated interest in joining the Peoples Democratic Party in the state.

Our correspondent gathered that Nwaze invited her to his office where they had a conversation on Monday.

During a second meeting on Tuesday, the governor’s aide was alleged to have driven the victim to his house where the alleged rape took place.

While Odinakachi claimed she was sexually violated, Nwaze denied having any form of sexual contact with her, saying it was mere blackmail.

A Facebook user, Kehinde Adeola, had claimed that the victim contacted her on Tuesday through Facebook Messenger, alleging that she had just been raped by the governor’s aide.

She said, “I tried getting more details from her, but she was so broken that she was bent on harming him in his sleep.

“Throughout that night, I was awoke with her till she went offline. He seized her phone when he woke up and saw she was chatting. Early hours of yesterday again (Wednesday), he repeated the rape and gave her N1,000 for transportation.

“She said she wanted justice and because she might not be able to get legal justice, she opted to take the law into her own hand. This I tried to prevent and was successful.

“I got her password and her Facebook username and started a chat with Francis. He seemed to be a very hard one to crack, as he kept saying he didn’t have sex with her, or force her home, neither did he rape her. All effort to make him confess was abortive.

“I called again yesterday and spoke as if I was Esther. After denying not having sex at all, he said, ‘Didn’t I give you N1,000 after everything?”

Odinakachi told journalists on Thursday that the governor’s aide deceived her.

She said, “We are friends on Facebook. I told him that I was a member of the All Progressives Congress and that I wanted to join the PDP. He said he could make me relevant in the party and that the governor was his brother. He said we needed to meet face-to-face.

“We scheduled to meet at the government house. Because I put on trousers, I was not allowed in. So, he drove outside the gate and said I should follow him so he could go and meet his friends. I entered the car and we went where he met his friends. There was not much we could discuss because of that.

“When it was 9pm, I told him I wanted to go home. He said he wanted to take me to his house so that we could have a better discussion there. I left and went home.

“On Tuesday, he said there would be a meeting at an amusement park. I asked if it was a PDP meeting and he said no, but it was a meeting that I should attend. I told him I would be busy, but would be available by 8pm.

“I came out of my school’s gate around that time and saw him waiting for me. I entered the car and was surprised that he didn’t follow the road that led to the amusement park. I asked why he changed his mind. He said he wanted to take me to a calm place because the park was noisy.  I told him my father and fiancé were aware of my meeting with him and that if he did anything funny, he would not get out of it.”

She explained that the suspect took her to a relaxation spot in a hotel where they shared drinks, adding that around 9.30pm, Nwaze said he was going home.

The victim said she told him that she would find her way back home, but the suspect insisted on taking her back.

“I entered the vehicle and we began the journey home. However, I observed that instead of taking Afikpo Road, he took another road. I asked where he was going, and he said he was taking me to my house. I protested that it was not my route, but he said he wanted to take a shortcut. I was uncomfortable. As he continued driving, I started shouting and screaming. He took me to his house and raped me,” she added.

The suspect, who described the allegations as lies to destroy his reputation, said he never touched Odinakachi.

He told journalists that he was not moved by the plot.

He said, “She said she was tired of APC and wanted to join PDP. I told her to go to her ward or local government to register. Besides, I asked what her strength was in her ward and she said she just wanted to be relevant.

“At the end of it, I invited her to my office and she came. I gave her a guide and after everything, she went back. To cut the story short, I never knew she was planted to blackmail me. I never raped her. There was no such thing.

“On the N1,000 I gave her; when she was in my vehicle, she said she misplaced her N1,000 in the car. I was surprised and wondered how her money would go missing in my car. I shouted at her and said if she needed money, she should have told me, instead of lying that her money was missing. I told her that I had only N1,200 and I could manage to give her N1,000.

“Yesterday (Wednesday), she called me and asked if I saw the N1,000. I was shocked and told her to stop calling me over the N1,000 and it was out of my magnanimity that I gave her my N1,000. Then suddenly, she flared up and said if I didn’t give her money, she would blackmail me. She said in fact, I was a rapist. She said she would deal with me and end my career.

“I told her she could take the matter to the public and let people crucify me. I graduated from Anambra State University and I am in politics; if it is about getting girls, I have choice and if conji (libido) holds me, I know where to get it. So, why will I rape a woman?  I did not rape anyone during my university days, is it now that I will rape? I have girls throwing themselves at me, so why will I rape her?”

The police spokesperson, Odah, said the matter was being investigated, adding that medical tests had been done.

“The matter is being handled by the gender unit at the SCIID. Investigation is ongoing,” she said.

Why I gave N450,000 gift to judge – SAN

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria ( SAN ), Mr. Paul Usoro, has explained why he gave N450,000 to a judge of the National Industrial Court, Justice James Agbadu-Fishim.

He said it was a gift, not a bribe.

Usoro, who is aspiring for the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) presidency, was reacting to a statement credited to a human rights lawyer, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu.

Odinkalu said Usoro admitted “bribing” a judge and should not be allowed to run for the office.

“It is an insult to us all. We all have a duty to stop it (Usoro’s bid). In a sane country, Paul Usoro should be facing disciplinary proceedings at best and should have been disbarred,” Odinkalu said.

But, Usoro, in a statement issued by a Partner in his firm, Munirudeen Liadi, said he and Justice Agbadu-Fishim had been friends and were known to each other long before the judge joined the Bench.

The SAN said he had only one case before the judge, and that before his firm was engaged to handle the case, he gave a gift of N250,000 to the judge on August 5, 2014, about five months before his firm got the brief.

Usoro said all the three cash gifts he gave to the judge were at the judge’s request and that none was related to the case.

Woman who killed her husband in Ibadan to spend seven years in jail

An Ibadan lawyer who killed her husband got yesterday the reward of her action — seven years in jail.

Justice Munta Abimbola of the Oyo State High Court, Ring Road, Ibadan convicted Yewande Oyediran of manslaughter. The term is to run from the day of her arrest.

The court held that although the evidence showed that she killed her husband, none of the witnesses established the intent of the accused or described seeing her stabbing the deceased.

The judge noted that the killing was done without intent, going by the fact that the parties were married at the time of the incident.

The accused stabbed her husband, Lowo Oyediran, in the neck on February 2, 2016 at their 30, Adeniyi Layout, Abidi-odan, Akobo, Ibadan home, following a misunderstanding.

Yewande, an official of the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP), Ministry of Justice, Oyo State, had been on trial since February, last year.

She was arraigned on a one- count charge of killing her man with a knife.

The offence was said to be contrary to Section 316 and punishable under Section 319 of the laws of Oyo State.

The accused pleaded not guilty when the trial began.

The judge said that with the evidence before the court, the convict and her late husband had frequently engaged in domestic violence.

He also adjudged the evidence of the couple’s landlord and wife, Mr and Mrs Akinpelu, as credible.

The landlord and his wife had told the court that they saw the convict holding a knife, while blood was flowing from the deceased’s body.

“Having seen the defendant holding a knife and the defendant had earlier confirmed that she had earlier stabbed her husband with a pair of scissors a day before, I hold that it was the defendant that stabbed the deceased,’’ said the judge.

Justice Abimbola also said that he considered the autopsy report of Prof. Abideen Oluwashola, a consultant from the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

“According to the autopsy report, the deceased died as a result of shock from a deep wound caused by a sharp object,’’ the judge added.

The court said the evidence of the convict could not be relied upon, because her statement with the police was different from her statement before the court.

The private prosecutor engaged by the Ministry of Justice to prosecute the case, Mr. Akinyele Sanyaolu, expressed satisfaction. He described the judgment as well researched.

He added that he would report what happened in the court to the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of Oyo State for a directive.

He said: “I am satisfied with the judgment but i don’t know whether the state will be happy or not. I will write my report to the Oyo State Government through the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice to look into it.

“The court has really done a very great job. The issue was that, the court was able to establish between murder and manslaughter when it comes to matrimonial matters and that is why it came to the issue of intention which was why the court didn’t sentence the accused to death because they were married and the law presumed that she doesn’t have the intention to kill her husband but if it were to be a third party, such a person is going to the gallow.

“That was the reason the court had to substitute it with manslaughter.”

A lawyer Mr. Femi Aborisade, who represented a non-governmental organisation, Women Arise, described the judgment as “justice for Lowo”

He said: “I think that the court has done justice to Lowo because the Court painstakingly, soberly and calmly appraised the evidence before it and came to the conclusion that the defendant is guilty as charged and I think that is justice for Lowo.

Yewande Oyediran husband killer gets away with manslaughter

An Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan on Monday sentenced a lawyer, Yewande Oyediran, to seven years imprisonment for stabbing her husband, Lowo, to death.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the trial judge, Munta Abimbola, said Yewande was convicted of manslaughter and not murder as charged.

Abimbola said that while the prosecution proved that the defendant caused the death of the deceased, it failed to proof that it was done intentionally.

He ordered that the seven year imprisonment should commence from Feb.2, 2016 when she was arrested.

The judge said that with the evidence before the court, the convict and her late husband had frequently engaged in domestic violence.

He also adjudged the evidence of the couple’s landlord and wife, Mr and Mrs Akinpelu, as credible.

The landlord and his wife had told the court that they saw the convict holding a knife, while the deceased was in a pool of blood.

“Having seen the defendant holding a knife and the defendant had earlier confirmed that she had earlier stabbed her husband with a pair of scissors a day before, I hold that it was the defendant that stabbed the deceased,’’ said the judge.

Abimbola also said that he took into consideration the autopsy report of Prof. Abideen Oluwashola, a consultant from the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.

“According to the autopsy report, the deceased died as a result of shock from a deep wound caused by a sharp object,’’ Abimbola said.

The court said that the evidence of the convict could not be relied upon, because her statement with the police was different from her statement before the court.

Mr Leye Adepoju, the defence counsel, pleaded for leniency for his client, as she was a first time offender. He argued that imprisonment was not to ruin, but to reform.

“If it is too long, it would ruin the life and as well jeopardise the job of the defendant, being a legal practitioner,” he said.

The prosecution counsel, Mr Sanya Akinyele, however, said he was leaving the issue of the sentencing to the discretion of the court.

NAN reports that Yewande Oyediran, a staff of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) in the Oyo State Ministry of Justice, stabbed her husband to death on 2 Feb. 2016, at Akobo area of Ibadan.

The convict stood trial on a lone count of murder. She pleaded not guilty to the charge.

My wife chats with her ex-lover on Facebook

A 45-year-old Marketer, Samsideen Apanisile, on Monday sought the dissolution of his 14 years marriage to his wife, Basirat, at an Ikorodu Customary Court in Lagos State, for allegedly communicating with her ex-lover on Facebook.

Apanisile, the Petitioner and a resident of Aladiye Community in Ikorodu, told the court to dissolve the union over claims that his wife was communicating with a man, whom he suspected to be her ex-lover.

“My wife fornicates. Apart from that, she is very disrespectful to me and my family.

“I have proof of her communication with men on Facebook. I have a print-out of her conversation from her Facebook inbox.

“I am fed up with the union. I can no longer live with an adulterous wife. An adulterous wife can kill her husband, please separate us,” he told the court.

However, the 44-year-old respondent, Basirat, a trader and mother of four children, denied the claim and accused her husband of not making her happy.

“My husband is always making phone calls. He does not have time for me.

“He is accusing me of infidelity but I was never jealous when he brought another woman to our house.

“I am not fornicating as he has alleged. There is no man that would marry me with four children. I plead for settlement,” she said.

The petitioner tendered a printout of his wife’s alleged conversation with men on Facebook to the court.

The President of the Court, Mrs Funmi Adeola, urged both parties to remain in peace, while the court would commence a series of investigations into the matter.

She adjourned the case until Dec. 4, for continuation of hearing.

Outrage as couple’s s3x video goes viral in Taraba

The Taraba Police Command, on Monday, warned citizens in the state against circulating sex video on social network platforms.

A sex video involving a man and a woman, both of whom were residents of Jalingo, had gone viral on the social network, sparking off public outrage.

The command’s spokesman, Mr David Misal, said that circulating sex video can constitute a public nuisance, which can spark off public unrest.

“The perpetrators of this act must desist from it immediately because it can cause public nuisance and dent the image of our society,’’ Misal said.

When contacted, a Muslim cleric, Ustaz Aminu Abdullahi, condemned the video and urged security stakeholders in the state to address the issue immediately.

“I am calling on all stakeholders to tackle this offence, which is against our religion, culture and even our laws.

“The two persons having sex in the tape are residents of Jalingo. We expect them to be brought to book to serve as a deterrent to others.

“This irresponsibility cannot be allowed to continue because it will erode our values and expose our children to immorality.”
