SHOCKING: Man sells daughter to ‘bury’ mother-in-law

A 37-year-old man, Kingsley Oriaku, has been arrested by the police for selling his one-year-old daughter, Nkechi, for N190, 000 to bury his mother-in-law.

It was gathered that the suspect also abducted and sold his neighbour’s seven-year-old kid for N120,000.

Oriaku reportedly sold both kids at a fake Orphanage Home in Abia State.

He told his neighbour that he wanted to buy something for the child before fleeing with him.

Police said the suspect admitted to the crime, adding that he claimed he was confused and frustrated.

In his confessional statement, Oriaku said: “I know that what I did was not good but then I was confused and frustrated.

“My wife is the first and only daughter and when her mother died sometime in September my in-laws gave me an outrageous bill.

“Not knowing what to do, I took my daughter and handed her over to the owner of an orphanage home. I got to know her through one of my friends. She told me that she runs an orphanage and that she buys children who do not have parents.

“I remembered her when I had problem with raising money for my in-law’s burial.

“I later had problem with my wife when she found out that I left town with our child. She reported me to the police at Meiran. At the station, I admitted selling off our daughter. We later settled the matter between us.

“Two days later, I tricked my neighbour’s son, Gabriel with sweet, into following me out one evening. Immediately we left our house at Meiran, I headed to the motor park where I boarded a mid-night vehicle to Abia.

“I called the owner of the orphanage before I left Lagos with my neighbour’s son. We had agreed that she would pay me N190,000 but surprisingly when I got to Umuahia, Abia State, she said she can only pay me N120,000 for the boy.”

Lagos State Police Commissioner, Imohimi Edgal, said it was a clear case of abduction and child theft, adding that the police followed a report of missing child filed by one Olabisi Yanga in October.

I’ll give you $5m to have my baby, lawmaker woos aide

A former aide to American member of parliament, Trent Franks, has said the congressman repeatedly pressed her to carry his child, at one point offering her $5m to act as a surrogate mother.

The eight-term lawmaker abruptly resigned Friday, bowing to an ultimatum from House Speaker Paul Ryan.

Ryan told Franks that he would refer the allegations to the Ethics Committee and urged him to step aside.

The former aide said the congressman, at least four times, asked if she would be willing to act as a surrogate in exchange for money.

Franks, in his statement announcing his resignation, said he and his wife, who have struggled with infertility, have twins who were carried through surrogacy.

The former aide said the conversations took place in private, sometimes in the congressman’s car, and that she repeatedly told him she wasn’t interested.

She said she never filed a formal complaint because until recently, she didn’t know where to go, but that his behavior had made her feel uncomfortable.

The aide asked that her name be withheld out of concern for her privacy.

“During my time there, I was asked a few times to look over a ‘contract’ to carry his child, and if I would conceive his child, I would be given $5m,” she said, adding that she refused to look over the contract and has never seen a copy.

The woman said the requests shocked her, and made her feel afraid that if she didn’t agree, she would face professional consequences. She said she spoke to another aide in the office, who had also been approached about surrogacy.

The aide cited the surrogacy requests as “a main reason” for leaving the office, adding that she felt retaliated against after turning down the congressman, as she was ignored by Franks and not given many assignments.

A spokesman for Franks would not comment on whether the congressman offered aides money in exchange to act as surrogates.

Franks, a staunch conservative, said in his statement Thursday that he never physically intimidated, coerced or attempted to have sexual contact with any member of his congressional staff.

Franks, 60, said he had become familiar with the surrogacy process in recent years and “became insensitive as to how the discussion of such an intensely personal topic might affect others.”

He said he regrets that his “discussion of this option and process in the workplace” with two female staffers made them feel uncomfortable.

Franks resigned from the Congress with immediate effect on Friday, citing the need to attend to his sick wife’s need as reason.

Maryam Sanda the 'Husband Killer' denied bail

Justice Yusuf Halilu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Jabi, Abuja, yesterday refused the oral application for bail made on behalf of Maryam Sanda, and ordered her returned to Suleja prison pending her re-arraignment next Thursday.

“I will not grant her bail; all arguments about her bail shall be taken together at the next adjourned date when other co-defendants will be in court. Therefore, the defendant shall be taken back to prison, he said.

At the last adjourned date, the FCT Police Command, in a two-count charge, accused Maryam, daughter of a former Executive Director of Aso Savings and Loans, Hajiya Maimuna Aliyu Sanda, of killing her husband, Bilyamin Bello, the son of Alhaji Bello Haliru Muhammad, a former chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The police said Maryam caused Bello’s death “by stabbing him on the chest with a broken bottle; this you did with the knowledge that your act is likely to cause his death.”

Upon her arraignment on November 24, the court ordered that she be remanded in prison after she pleaded not guilty to the charges.

But yesterday, Police Prosecutor James Idachaba told the court of an amended charge before the court, which added Maryam’s mother, Maimuna Aliyu, and two others, as defendants.

He, however, said efforts to serve Maimuna and others were unsuccessful, urging the court to adjourn till next Thursday to enable the police bring all defendants to court to take their pleas.

Maryam’s new lawyer Chief Joseph Daudu (SAN) urged the court to listen to the bail application filed on her behalf.

He also made an oral bail application, pleaded with Justice Halilu to release Maryam on temporary bail, saying the prison condition was unwholesome for Maryam’s six-month-old baby.

“It is unfortunate that a life has been lost already, but we should not take more lives,” he pleaded.

But with another objection by the police prosecutor, Justice Halilu held that he is not disposed to grant the oral application since issues have been joined on the formal application for bail.

But Justice Halilu ruled in favour of the prosecutor, saying the bail would be taken after the re-arraignment.

“The defendant, in the mean time, shall be returned to the prison pending Thursday, December 14,” the judge said.

He earlier ordered Maryam’s daughter, who is in the custody of a relative, taken out of court for crying.

Robbers attack bullion van in Delta, cart away millions of Naira

There was pandemonium yesterday in parts of Asaba, the Delta State capital after bandits attacked a bullion van and made away with millions of naira.

It was gathered that the bullion van belongs to a first generation bank in Anambra State. Sounds of gunshots echoed during the operation forcing motorists and passers-by to scamper for safety. The development which made motorists to abandon vehicles in the middle of the Benin-Asaba dual carriageway resulted in traffic gridlock.

It was learnt that the policemen escorting the bullion van engaged the robbers in a shootout, but were overpowered by the superior firepower of the robbers. An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity said the siren blaring bullion van was ambushed by a gang of robbers in a convoy of three vehicles which included a grey Sienna van. “The police escorts numbering eight subsequently fled the scene of the incident,” the eyewitness said. Another eyewitness said: “The hoodlums came in about three cars and intercepted the bullion van at the junction. They started shooting and innocent people took to their heels to avoid being victims of stray bullets.

“Even vehicles on the expressway were making detour as a result of the attack. The officers attached to the van responded but I think the hoodlums had superior fire arms because the officers soon disappeared, giving the bandits an unfettered access to the cash stocked in the bullion van.” Delta police image maker, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, who confirmed the incident said “internal connivance” cannot be ruled out, lamenting that some commercial banks were still in the habit of conveying money without using bullet-proof vans despite repeated warnings by the police command.

He said the van was coming from Onitsha and heading towards Agbor, adding that the bullion van had made stops at Awka, and Onitsha in Anambra State. His words: “I suspect internal connivance. This is in spite of the warning issued by the state command for commercial banks to convey money following approved guidelines.

The bullion van is not bullet proof. It is a configured bullion van” Continuing, he said: “Who informed the hoodlums that they were carrying cash through that route? It is quite unfortunate that banks are still using configured bullion vans without bullet proof, subjecting their personnel and escort officers to unnecessary risk. “As we speak now, investigation is on, but I cannot tell you how much cash the bullion van was carrying before the attack. What I can assure is that the command will put necessary measures in place to bring whoever was involved directly or indirectly to justice.” Aniamaka also confirmed that no life was lost and no injury was sustained during the shootout.

Libya returnee rejects Edo governor’s monthly stipend, says Libya is the best place to work

A 27-year old Libya deportee, Obehi Diamond, has described Libya as the best country where a young man can work and earn good money if there was a central government in the country.

Obehi said he lost all his earnings and savings in Libya because there was no way he could send money back to Nigeria.

He said he was tricked to Libya by a lady he gave N520,000 to take him to Europe in 2011 by flight but the woman abandoned him in Libya.

Speaking to our reporter in Benin City, Obehi said he was kidnapped four times but he bailed himself out with 4000 dinars on each occasion but never contemplated going to Europe because work was good for him in Libya.

Obehi stated that he would not attend any training organised by the Edo State Government because he was already a professional.

He said the N20,000 monthly stipend Governor Godwin Obaseki promised to pay Libya deportees was not what many of them need but good tools to start life again.

His words, “I left Nigeria in 2012. I paid money for flight but the women betrayed me and took me through land to Libya. I paid her N520,000 in 2011. She kept on promising me that I will soon leave. She later asked me to go to Libya that there was somebody to receive me until I will leave for Europe. When I got to Libya, Richard told me I could not travel by air because there is on government in Libya.

“I started working in Libya and earning 1,500dinars every month but Richard was collecting 1000 dinars every month from the money. He kept collecting money from me for four months.

“I later told him that I cannot be working and he will be collecting the money. Richard told my boss to stop paying me. He told me to leave his house and I started sleeping in the street inside abandoned vehicles. I later met a boy who took me to his house in a mechanic workshop. I got a job somewhere and was earning 2000 dinars. From there I was sending money to my parents in Nigeria to take care off themselves. My friend found a job for me in Tripoli and I was working well.

“In 2014, I was going to take measurement for a job, policemen stop the vehicle I was in. I was the only black inside. After interrogation, they tore my papers. I spent eight months in four different prisons. I got a phone to call my friend and he told me to look for a policeman to bail me out. In Libya, there is no lawyer to bail you. A policeman helped me out and I paid him 120,000 dinars. I started working again in Tripoli till 2016 when fight started. I found another place to work in downtown due to fighting in Tripoli. After a month, I asked my boss to calculate the money and it was 4000 dinars. He wanted it pay me 600 dinars and I refused. I stopped the work because I am a professional. I could get work easily because people used to call me for work. The man pursued me and said I must work for him. He took thugs to pursue me and for my safety I decided to work for 600 dinars.

“When I was arrested in Tripoli, I spent 15 months in prison before I was deported. I was not planning to go to Europe. In Libya, there is work. Libya is the best country in aspect of money and work. There is no country to compare to Libya. The problem is the lack of government. Libya is the best place for a young man to work and survive. There is money in Libya if you are a good workman. There is future in Libya for those that are not lazy.

“Since 2015, there was no means to send money home. Libyans know that we blacks do keep money at home. When they caught me, they went to my house to collect my money. They took my property. I lost everything. They took huge money from me. If I had come home with that money, I would not have depend on government to help me, I will just open my shop immediately.

“If the state government help me to open my shop, I will not think of traveling again. The pattern of aluminum work in Libya is different so I had to learn from an Egyptian.

“There is nobody that go to Libya that does not have skills except the Benin boys. The Benin boys are lazy. I don’t play with my work when I was in Libya even on Fridays.

“The training from Obaseki is out of point. I don’t want to under go any training here in Edo. If I have my money, I will go to Lagos and start working immediately. I cannot collect N20,000 monthly from Obaseki. That is no money. That is what I work in Libya in two days. I don’t need any training. What I need is money to start off. My fiancée is still in prison in Libya. I am expecting her to be brought back soon.”

Woman forced to keep dead baby in fridge

A Peruvian woman was forced to keep the body of her dead baby in a freezer after a hospital told her to keep it until she had a death certificate.

Monica Palomino said her baby was born prematurely last Saturday after a gestation of only 25 weeks and died on Monday.

But under pressure from security personnel at Lima’s Sergio Bernales hospital, she had to take the body home until she could begin the process of getting a death certificate.

“They gave me my son when I was discharged. He’s in the refrigerator in my house because they did not give me the time to do the paperwork for his death certificate,” Palomino told ATV television.

“I want to bury him but to do so I need the death certificate,” said the mother, who returned to the hospital on Tuesday to claim it.

Meanwhile, the child’s body remained in the freezer of the family refrigerator. On the door she placed a sign that says, “Do Not Touch.”

“The woman in charge of the gynecology department did not want to let me leave the hospital if I didn’t take my baby. My baby was wrapped in a diaper.”

Hospital director Julio Silva said Wednesday it would investigate the woman’s complaint, because he said the security guards had broken all the hospital’s procedures.

“I assume full responsibility. What should have been done is wait in the mortuary for the death certificate to be issued, to then be able to remove the body,” Silva told reporters.

Nigerian policeman shoots student over N1,000

A policeman attached to the Igbuzo Police Division, identified simply as Sergeant Abua, is allegedly on the run after shooting a student at the Delta State Polytechnic, Sofia Ogogo, and a civil servant, Victor Emeagwai, at a checkpoint in the community.

The victims were in a Toyota Corolla, driven by an estate agent, Jerry Akinlabi, when the incident happened. Ogogo and Emeagwai are Akinlabi’s girlfriend and friend respectively

It was  learnt that a team of five policemen, including Abua, had flagged down Ogogo at a checkpoint along Igbuzo Market.

One of the policemen, identified as Nwokolo, was said to have demanded money from Akinlabi and the driver told him that he did not have N200 to give him.

Nwokolo reportedly said he would take one of the N1,000 notes Jerry had on him.

As Akinlabi drove off from the checkpoint, Abua reportedly shot at the car and bullets pierced the back of the vehicle, hitting Ogogo, who sat at the back seat.

The bullet also grazed the back of Emeagwai, who was at the passenger’s seat.

Akinlabi told our correspondent that four cops, including the team leader, one ASP Akhabue, were detained by the police, while Abua evaded arrest.

He said, “On Sunday, November 17, 2017, I was driving to the Igbuzor Market and on getting to a checkpoint, I met the policemen. We knew one another some months ago when I had an issue concerning a property at the station. I sounded the horn to greet them, but they did not respond.

“One of them used his gun to hit the boot and I reversed. He said I wanted to beat the checkpoint. I told him that I assumed that they knew me very well and apologised. He demanded money. I wanted to give him N100 or N200, but it was N1,000 notes I had on me and I explained to him.

“He said, ‘Am I too small to collect N1,000?’ When I declined to give him N1,000, he asked me to pull over, which I did. As the argument over N1,000 got heated, I entered my car and drove off. What I heard next was three gunshots aimed at my car.

“A bullet pierced into the car, hit my girlfriend’s body, came out and hit my friend in the back.”

The 22-year-old indigene of Oyo State said he took the victims to a general hospital in Igbuzo, from where Ogogo was referred to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba.

He said he called a senior police officer at Asaba who notified the state Commissioner of Police of the incident.

He said, “The CP and the DPO of the Igbozo Police Station came to the FMC and deposited N100,000, but I have spent much more than that. Meanwhile, the policeman who shot at us had gone to drop the gun at the station and fled. The other four policemen were detained at the command headquarters. My friend and I wrote our statements there.”

Akinlabi explained that a police officer asked him to drop his car key to aid investigation. He added that he handed over the car key, but activated the steering lock because he suspected foul play.

He said he met with the Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 5, Benin, Edo State, who assigned a policeman to take his statement, adding that the policeman came down to the police command, Asaba, the following day.

“As I was returning from Zone 5 on Monday, I received a call from the Investigating Police Officer at the police headquarters in Asaba and he asked for the steering key. The IPO and a policeman came down to the hospital and I told them I would have to look for the key when I got home.

“The policeman sent from Zone 5 invited my friend to the police headquarters in Asaba to write his statement too. When he got there, he saw some policemen moving the car. He called to ask me if I gave them the key to unlock the steering and I said no. When I called the IPO, he confirmed what my friend said and he told me that there was no cause for alarm.”

He said the command returned his car washed, with the bullet holes on the vehicle covered and painted, lamenting that he had not heard from the command and zone 5.

Akinlabi’s girlfriend, Ogogo, who spoke to newsmen from the hospital, said she was on the telephone when the bullet hit her.

“That was the last thing I remembered until I found myself at the hospital,” she added.

Emeagwai urged the police authorities not to sweep the case under the carpet, saying the policemen must be punished.

He said, “I don’t see any reason for the shooting. I have been going to the FMC to treat the gunshot injury for about three weeks now. The policemen should not go scot-free.”

Harrison Gwamnishu, the Coordinator of Behind Bars, a rights group, which Akinlabi contacted on the matter, said the group would institute a legal action against the police.

He said, “We want to charge the case to court as a civil matter. It is barbaric. Why did the police wash the bloodstains in the car and covered the bullet holes without the consent of the owner?”

The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, said the policemen would be brought to book if found culpable after investigation.

He said, “The case is being investigated. However, our utmost concern is that the injured victim gets proper treatment. The Area Commander and the DPO of the division in question are involved in the matter.

“The case is being investigated by Zone 5. Where somebody is absent from duty for 21 days without any reason, we declare such a person a deserter. So, there is no anxiety that the policeman is on the run. Rest assured that the right thing will be done.”

Nigerian student shot dead while watching UEFA Champions League in a viewing center

Suspected gunmen on Tuesday night stormed a popular viewing centre, Kaneworld Resort in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, and shot dead a final year student of the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) while watching the UEFA Champions League matches.

NE gathered that a three-man gang, stormed the viewing centre located at 17, Idak Okpo lane, few minutes to the end of the matches involving Manchester United, Chelsea and Bayern Munich and shot the victim.

The heavily armed gunmen reportedly ordered viewers to lie face down while they searched for their target.

“When they (the criminals) ordered everyone to lie down, the deceased struggled with his Infinix phone and was shot at close range, Effiong Akpan, a Manchester United fan told newsmen.

According to him, the deceased, Dominic Ubiat, a final year Microbiology student from Ibiono Ibom local government area of the state was shot on his groin at close range.

“He ran with patches of blood from the viewing centre and was chased by the hoodlums to his house located about 500 metres and died before help could reach him,” another fan added.

NE gathered that youths from the area arrived a little too late to take him to the hospital where medics confirmed he died from excessive loss of blood.

His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ubiat, who visited the scene of the incident on Wednesday, lamented that all the years of their son in the university was in vain and vowed to go the extra mile to avenge his death.

“Look at the blood of my son,” Mr. Ubiat lamented, vowing that “the blood of my son shall haunt those behind this dastardly act of cowardice.”

The deceased’s mother, accompanied by other family members and school mates, wondered why her son could be left to die after being shot.

“From every indication here, help did not come early enough, otherwise my son would have survived if he had been rushed to the hospital at the right time,” she lamented.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Elkana Bala, described the incident as “a pure robbery attack.”

Man wins ‘Most Ugly’ title for the fifth time

For the fifth time, Zimbabwean man, William Masvinu, has won the title of Mr. Ugly.

He had lost last year to Maison Sere in controversial circumstances. However, he won  this year’s edition of the competition held over the weekend in Ruwa area of Zimbabwe.

The “Ugliest Man in the Land” walked away with $500, and a cow.

Fanuel Musekiwa was first runner-up and he went home with $200; while Maison Seregot got $100 for being the second runner up.

Masvinu said he was happy to reclaim the crown after losing it last year.

“No one can dispute that I am the ugliest person in Zimbabwe. I now want to take my ugliness outside the country. If there is Mr. Ugly World, I am confident I will bring the crown to Zimbabwe,” he said.

Musekiwa, who came second, promised to work hard next year so that he could wrest the crown from Masvinu.

“I will be working hard on my looks and the way I present myself. Come next year, I am going to take over the crown,” he said.

Organiser of the pageant, David Machowa, known in entertainment circles as Apama, said he was happy with this year’s edition.

“This year’s event was bigger and better. It coincided with the braai festival where 14,000kg of meat were eaten,” he said.

Masvinu caught the eye of the nation through his touted ugliness which has seen him winning the crown a record five times.

He is mobbed everywhere he goes because people want to catch a glimpse of him.

In the process, he has pocketed hundreds of dollars because of his “talent.”

He even had a grand ‘wedding’ where his ugliness was paraded in the street of Harare.

How Instagram friend drugged, made love and took my unclad pictures – Unilorin student

A University of Ilorin female student (name withheld), has narrated how a man she met on Instagram drugged, raped and took her unclad pictures in a Lagos hotel.

Crying profusely while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Ilorin, the lady said she met the man through social media network (Instagram), where the relationship started.

“He asked for a relationship which I was reluctant to accept but I accepted.

“I met him for the first time in Lagos when I was on holiday. He later invited me to an hotel in Ojo area of Lagos, that was when I met him for the second time.

“It was when I was preparing to return to school, so he demanded s.e.x which I turned down.

“He promised me N15,000 and transferred it to me, we had a drink but I noticed I was dizzy.

“So it was when one of the hotel waiters brought a condom that I started to cause a scene before people came to my rescue.

“Later that day, he called and threatened to send my unclad pictures he took to my Daddy, I was surprised how he got my father’s number.

“It was because of the threat that I had to go to him again to have s.e.x and to ask him delete all the pictures but he again said he had video of when we were having s.e.x.

“I couldn’t confront my parents because I was scared and told my pastor, so it was my pastor that reported the matter to the police,” the Unilorin student said.

She described the man as a devil who had taught her a painful lesson.

Confirming the incident, Kwara police spokesman, Ajayi Okasanmi, told NAN that the suspect was arrested but escaped during interrogation.

“We invited the suspect to Ilorin with the help of the lady he was threatening.

“We arrested him and seized the phone which has the unclad pictures.

“So, we asked an officer to go and search where he lodged in Ilorin only for him to escape in the process and we have not seen him till date,” Okasanmi explained.

Okasanmi said that the suspect later went on social media claiming that he collected money from him

The Kwara Police spokesman challenged the suspect to come out and sue him if his claims were true.(NAN)
