'Freed' Prison inmate begs Anambra court - 'Please i want to remain in prison'

here was a mild drama at Ekwulobia prisons in Anambra State on Friday when an inmate, Tobias Mbaekwe, who was granted amnesty by Chief Judge of Anambra State, Justice Peter Umeadi, on health grounds, declined the pardon.

Mbaekwe, from Ozubulu in Ekwusigo Local Government Area of the state, was among 13 others freed in the exercise.

The defendant fell on the floor shortly after the ruling that he should be freed on bail, begging the Chief Judge to allow him stay back in the prison, where he said his life was better secured.

He informed the court that his relatives would gang up and kill him if freed.

He said, “They said they will kill me if I come back home. They grabbed my father’s land after killing him in 1980. They latter kidnapped me and threatened to kill me and that is why they abandoned me here since 2012,” he cried.

Justice Umeadi, however, directed Ekwulobia Prisons Welfare Officer to take the defendant to the Divisional Police Officer of Ozubulu Police Station to take Mbaekwe home.

The judge directed that the defendant should be visited every three months to ascertain his situation.

Justice Umeadi said the culprit could be re-arraigned anytime the police would want to prosecute him.

The Chief Judge also discharged a 34-year-old Obinna Nwankwo Udemgba, who was detained since 2013 without prosecution.

Ruling on Udemgba’s case, Justice Umeadi discharged him (Udemgba) on the grounds of unnecessary delay by the Department of Public Prosecution to commence trial on the matter brought against the him as well as the attitude of the defendant’s relatives who abandoned him in the prison.

Others freed on bail were Japhet Onwuchekwe, Tochukwu Onyebuchi, Sunday Ulebe (Ebonyi), Amandi Dim, Chinonso Onyejeckwe.

The CJ said the exercise was targeted at bringing the court closer to the inmates, describing it as part of the corporate social responsibility of the judiciary.

He commended the security agencies, DPP, Prison officers, Red Cross Society, the judiciary and others for their efforts in ensuring that the exercise was a success.

Speaking, the Assistant Controller of Ekwulobia Prisons, Mr. Ubaenyi Patrick, described the visit as relief to the prison authorities and family of the inmates.

He said the 80-capacity prison facility housed 191 inmates, out of which, 161 were awaiting trial.

Woman bites electricity workers for disconnecting her light

A 28-year-old trader, Kemi Shopade, who allegedly assaulted two Ikeja Electric workers that wanted to disconnect her electricity wire, on Wednesday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Shopade, resident of Alaguntan, Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos, is being tried for conspiracy and assault.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awase, said that the accused committed the offences on Nov. 24, at her residence.

Awase said that the accused and two others, who had yet to be apprehended, assaulted two workers of Ikeja Electric — Mr John Oluwole and Mr Uwaoman Ibiam.

“The accused beat up and bit the complainants while performing their duty,” he said.

He said that the complainants disconnected the electricity supply of the accused over unpaid electricity bills from January.

“The accused, who had not paid for electricity since the beginning of the year, descended on the complainants when they disconnected her power supply.

“The two other men who are still at large joined her in beating the complainants, and in the process, the accused bit the complainants.

“The case was reported to the police and the accused was arrested,” the prosecutor said.

The offences contravened Sections 174 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 174 prescribes three years jail term for a person guilty of assault.

The accused, however, pleaded innocence of the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N20,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The Magistrate, Mr J.A. Adigun, said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Generator fumes kill two fashion designers in Edo

The bodies of two middle-aged women have been recovered in a lock-up shop in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.

The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Johnson Kokumo, who confirmed the incident to our correspondent on the telephone, said that the women died of suspected generator fumes.

“It is true; the story is correct. They died of generator fumes,” Kokumo said.

It was gathered that one of the deceased, said to be a fashion designer and the owner of the shop, Uju Muobuikwu, had invited her, the other victim, to assist her at the shop located on Second East Circular road.

It was also gathered that Muobuikwu had turned on a generator to enable her carry out the task throughout the night and deliver the clothes to her customer in time.

Her brother, Chukwudi, said that he had earlier received a call from his sister on Monday but could not reach her subsequently.

He said, “I got a call from my sister at about 2pm when she complained that her friend was getting weak. I told her to give her anointing oil.

“Minutes later, I put a call to her mobile phone to know the situation of things but she did not pick my call. So, I came here this morning and we invited the police to force the door open and that was it.”

The police commissioner explained that preliminary investigations revealed that the victims inhaled the toxic fumes from the generator.

He, however, said that the command would carry out an enlightenment campaign on the health hazards inherent in the indoor use of generator.

Kokumo explained, “I think they were fashion designers who must have been working all night to, probably, meet up with the demands of their customers this Yuletide.

“Maybe they (deceased) had a lot of things to get done for their customers and slept where the generator was on. So, they eventually died of the fumes of the generator. I think they did not know.”

“We will embark on public enlightenment to enlighten members of the public that it is dangerous to the health.”
